Old seeds - weak plants?

Does old seeds (7+ years or so) produce weaker plants or is the only difference many of them will not sprout?

Last time i tried it some plants did start to grow but those plants were stunted in growth after a while so i threw them away. Maybe just coincidence?

Got some old Bogglegum i'd really like to grow again, but the seeds are at least 7 years old (stored dark in a ziplockbag).

The seeds just become less viable overtime. They just are less likely to germinate but seeds can last 100 if not thousands of years.

Depending on storage seeds can and do last many years...I have seeds from the 80's (lambsbreath, Panama Red) and the last time I tried they popped in a week and only about a third actually made it to a cup. I store seeds in an old 35mm film container in their own baggies in the fridge.

I believe if properly stored you should have a few viable seeds, the length of time in the pod does not effect the strains genitics.

if stored properly you can keep seeds for several several years. put them in an air tight, dark container and put them in your freezer. im currently germinating some old bagseed that was only a few months old but wasnt stored properly so im not sure what results ill get. anyways happy growing and as always, stay smokey :leaf:

They have been stored in a zipbag, dark but perhaps not cold.. i really hope a few of them will grow, Bogglegum was really nice weed and it's not possible to buy those seeds any longer i believe. Thanks for the replies!

Anybody know how long seeds will last inside a sealed baggy inside a wooden bx inside a drawer? They've been in there for about 5 weeks.

Hmm sorry to jack the post, but i got a quick question, my buddy found a bagseed, it was small and didnt seem to be very mature but to my surprise it germed in paper towel, what about imature seeds? i thought most dont even germ?? Does that automatically mean a weak plant? i checked it today and its got a decent root maybe an inch long

If it germinated it means it was close to maturity when harvested and should grow into normal healthy plants. i'd hurry up and plant it though. The tap root is already long enough.

Thanks bong, actually i put it in some soil this morning and its already broken through the top soil so well see how it goes...
