The optimal time for most growers to harvest marijuana plants is when THC production has reached its maximum. A rough guide as to when to harvest is to wait until 50%-80% of the white pistils (hairs) have turned dark (usually brown or red). But a better method of determining when to harvest is to wait until certain trichomes on the plant have matured.

Trichomes are small appendages that look like hairs, they are produced by marijuana and other plants. Some trichomes on marijuana plants develop a resin gland at the top. These trichomes are a rich source of THC, and monitoring them will allow you to best judge when the plants are ready for harvesting.

On marijuana plants, trichomes with resin glands form in the highest concentration on buds. They start out clear, turn a milky color, then turn amber (light brown). To best judge when to harvest, keep an eye on the trichomes on the buds on each plant.

The best time to harvest a marijuana plant will depend on the desired effect you want. For maximum THC content and a more cerebral and energetic high, harvest your plants when about 50% of the trichomes have turned from clear to a milky translucent color.

Waiting until about 50% of the trichomes have turned from a milky translucent color to amber will result in marijuana that produces a combination of cerebral and body intoxication.

If you harvest when a majority of the trichomes are amber colored, the marijuana will produce more of a sleepy body stone than it would have if it were harvested earlier.

It is nearly impossible to see the trichomes with the human eye, so some type of magnification is needed. An inexpensive way to effectively view them is to use a pocket microscope rated at somewhere between 20x to 70x.

i think im either 5 1/2 or 6 1/2 weeks but i dunno. what u think?
personally i think your looking for an excuse to cut early. everyone likes some amber, no amber is like taking a bump of speed lol

u have a long while left. when it looks like something youd wanna find in your 'purchased' bag of weed then its prob close to ready. right now if you bought a sack and it had that in it, would you be happy? i wouldnt ...

well i know that the buds will look different after they dried, and id be very happy to find this from my medical supplier. i personnally feel the weed today is overgrown for one reason or another. heresay people saying 8-12 weeks but growing conditions make a plant finish faster than others. im thinking 1 1/2 to 2 weeks tops. which may bring me to between 6 1/2-7 weeks. 1 week less than the 8 1/2 weeks ive been told. i dunno. id like some input on it rather than just "8 1/2 weeks, its gotta be this long."

i would get the scope and keep an eye on the trichs. since you dont want a heavy stoned feeling I would wait til you have like 5%-10% amber then cut. you'll still get a nice cerebral high but a nice body buzz too.

these are clones btw.

i found this bit of info. As for clones vs seedplants , finishing times are usually shorter with cuts. Why? One of the reasons is the cuts usually come from a mother plant that has reach hormonal maturity (remember the age of a clone is the same as the mother plant's.
Now a cut taken from a mature 6-8week vegged seedplant will usually start flowering and finish faster than a cut taken from a 2-3 week vegged plant(which hadn't reached maturity with the short veg time)..or compared to the same seedplant flowered after a short veg period.Usually you can see the differences in first flower appearance during the budding cycle. A seedplant may take up to around 1.5-2.5 weeks to show sex in 12/12 while the same pheno when grown from clone that was taken from a mature mother seedplant will show first flower and start flowering within a week or even faster. In my experience you can save from one or less..to several weeks when growing from clone. It depends a lot on strain and usually the differences are more visible when growing late finishing strains. http://www.mrnice.nl/forum/archive/index.php?t-1950.html

alot of the upper leaves are rapidly dying and losing color. is it telling me to get the buds now, before the buds start dying too?

Here's mine at week 7 and I have no leaves left except for the ones on the buds. They just started to swell and produce more trichomes. Yours will do the same. Wait for the hairs to receed and the calyx to swell up.
