The new KS5000 is the first LED bar Fixture from ViparSpectra. It is a 500-watt foldable array with six LED bars that is designed for 4’ x 4’ coverage. The KS5000 is a well-engineered light with superior components and performance. ViparSpectra wanted to achieve both uniform coverage and superior efficiency. They studied the market and designed a light that has better diodes, is a little more powerful, and is bigger than competitive fixtures for 4’ x 4’ coverage. I think ViparSpectra made some great decisions and produced an excellent 4’ x 4’ grow light.
The ViparSpectra KS5000 features the state-of-the-art Samsung LM301h diodes. They also incorporate the leading Osram 660nm diodes to create an ideal spectrum for vegetative and flowering growth. The diodes are driven by Sosen drivers that come in a ViparSpectra case with a dimming knob and daisy chain ports.
Each of the six bars has 210 diodes. In total, there are 1,260 diodes or 2.52 diodes per watt. There are 1,224 Samsung LM301h diodes. 792 of them have a color temperature of 3000k. The remaining 432 have a color temperature of 5000k. There are also 36 of the Osram 660nm diodes
One of the design objectives for this light was to create a uniform distribution of PPFD across the canopy from corner to corner. This is a design objective for most grow lights on the market, but the ViparSpectra KS5000 accomplishes it better than most. There are several design features that allow it to be successful at achieving a uniform distribution.
The bars on the KS5000 are spaced with a larger gap in the middle. Along each bar the diodes are algorithmically distributed, and more diodes are concentrated out towards the ends. These are strategies that many grow lights now incorporate. The ViparSpectra KS5000 is markedly better at distribution than other fixtures designed for 4×4 coverage because it is also somewhat larger than other fixtures. Competitive fixtures are about 32” to 34” on each side. Whereas the ViparSpectra KS5000 is almost 40” on each side.
Uniform coverage is what every grower should look for. As the prices of grow lights have come down, more and more growers are putting lights designed for 5’ x 5’ coverage into 4’ x 4’ tents and running them a little dim. The larger frames provide amazing uniformity, and the fixtures have all the power you would ever need in a 4×4 space. However, the up-front costs can be prohibitive. The ViparSpectra KS5000 is priced like a 4’ x 4’ fixture, but it takes a step in the direction of the 5’ x 5’ fixtures. It is physically larger and more powerful than other 4’ x 4’ fixtures in its class.
The large frame and algorithmically distributed diodes allow the KS5000 to be run quite close to the canopy. I measured the maximum PPFD at 1000 µmol/m2 with a hanging height of only 28cm (11in) above the sensor. Despite the low hanging height, the edges and corners are still covered with great density light. The lowest PPFD in the corner is 525 µmol/m2. The Average PPFD is 783.7 µmol/m2, which is well above our target of 700 µmol/m2. The Usable PPF comes to 1128.5 µmol. The power draw during my test was 488 watts. That means the ViparSpectra KS5000 had a Usable Photon Efficiency of 2.31 µmol/w, which is phenomenal for a 4’ x 4’ grow light.
