Hi all, I figured it was about time to post some pics of my latest grow. Here's some facts about the grow:
I have grown Soil, DWC, and Hempy before (in this cabinet) and have tried LST and SCROG. The SCROG was great, but it's a bit of work and takes up a lot of room. It also makes it hard to do multiple plants at the same time (in this small ass cabinet). For 12/12 from seed, you don't really need to LST to fit vertically, but may need to do some cutting/training to fit laterally.
I have 4 going under my lights, but only 2 are mature, as 1 didn't take so I started a new one late, and the other ended up male so I had to toss it and start a new one. I am more or less experimenting with training/cutting/cropping/etc.. I topped the bigger one twice, and the smaller one later in its cycle. I defoliated the larger fan leaves and bud sites on the bigger one. I defoliated every single lower node after the smaller one had recovered from topping.
One thing I've learned thus far is that cutting all of the nodes except the top ("lollipopping"?) does not re-focus all of the plants energy on the remaining tops. This was a surprise to me, and perhaps there are some other variables in play here, but so far I'm not convinced it helps at all, and in fact it seems to have hindered it's output considerably (as compared to the plant who kept most of it's smaller leaves/nodes).
Another thing I've learned is nutrients are much harder to get right in a Solo cup. I had no problems when I was using a 3g tub, but in Solo cups, it's really hard to get right. Not just the nutrients, but the buildup in my automatic watering system. The sugars in the nutes get built up in the tub and unused/wasted, so perhaps I need to get a ppm meter so I can better measure the runoff from the cups. I also added an air bubbler (no airstone) to my water tub - this makes me feel better about using a water resevoir.
I think I have at least 2 weeks or so left on these, but I'd like to get some feedback from you all because the topping likely stalled it a bit so I may need to let them go a bit longer than 90 days... Lots of white hairs still, upright too, so I figure at least a week. The trichomes are large, upright, and becoming cloudy - there's a few orange ones, but I'm waiting for more.. It also looks like they are now "foxtailing" a bit, possibly do to the heat from the CFLs - what do you guys think? I also may have been under-watering initially, and got some bad nute burns (I think?) which have not helped, but the plants seem to be doing fine.. The tips are curled, I think due to the heat.. ??
All in all, I think lighting is still my weakpoint. I see many of you using 200-300w for a couple of Solo cups, and I'm a far cry from that..
- Seeds germinated in rockwool in a small humidity dome (with a heat pad beneath)
- 12/12 lighting only, as it's perpetual
- Bagseeds
- 16 ounce Solo cups, with a hole about 1" from the bottom
- Hempy method, using 50% Perlite, 50% Hydroton
- Drain-to-waste and mostly the runoff evaporates
- I add 2L nutrient-water back to res about every 2 days
- Using Flora Duo A+B, following it's flowering schedule
- 45w 16x16 LED + 2x23w 2700K CFLs
- Temps fluctuate from 78-86'F - the 2xCFLs added about 10'
- Humidity fluctuates from 40-55%
- Cabinet is metal, size 18D x 28W x 32H with some holes cut
- 2 x 120mm PC fans with custom TP roll + pantyhose carbon filter
- Automatic watering system - runs for 20s every 3 hours (more than enough to overflow the Hempys)
