Phenohunting or multiple strains ?

I wanna get your guys opinion on this. With phenohunting you can get many different expressions of the same plants. Many of these new “designer” genetics are poly hybrids meaning there’s probably allot of genetic variation. Do you think it would be better to buy allot of one strain and phenohunt for what type of bud you are looking for or to strain hunt and look through the types of strains that will give you the effects you want.

I tend to work the “ strain “ as it expresses over knowing if it has the lineage as described. I agree that a large percentage are hybrid offerings as most heirloom strains are somewhat scarce. I have malawi and that tall lanky sativa is a long running bitch ( 15 weeks + ) go harvest . Long slender spears . I used to shop sensi for base strains - they even had Ruderalis.

But now , i take the seed profiles with a grain of salt and mostly target uniformity of growth.

I’ve heard this before can you better describe what you mean by working the strain ?

Strains from seed are a crap shoot. They all grow differently. I like to seed them out, wait until they are ready to flip to 12/12, and then pick out potential mothers based on structure, ability to withstand the nute schedule, the environment, etc,... then take those 5 clones from 5 different mothers, and see how they finish. A winner is always in that bunch somewhere...thats why that call it hunting. You can then drill down to get a total crop that is identical in structure, production, etc.

These are drilled down clones from a 2 year pheno hunt. Notice how even the canopy is. This is because they all have the same genetic DNA. They all got trained the same, and they all looked, and produced the same. It's worth it if you have the patience. This is 4 strains. That group in the back 2 rows are the same strains...I knew they were tall stretchers, so I set them towards the back so they got the same amount of light.

Wow that was really helpful just curious how many seeds do you think is adequate for a phenohunt is a pack just enough or would you say run multiple packs of the same strain

Packs can get expensive. Do your research, buy packs of different strains from various breeders if you’re able. Once you find something you like, buy it again to see if you can find a better pheno in another pack.

When I hunt new gear, I pop multiple seeds from multiple packs. I can’t tel you how many seed packs I’ve been really excited to run and not found any keepers while freebies or packs the wife picked out (doesn’t smoke) and end up with the real keepers. It almost never seems to be in the pack you think it’s gonna be in.
I am very picky though, I can run 10 packs of seeds and be lucky to find one keeper

Don’t really seem to matter.. like I said, fem seeds are a crapshoot. Your going to get different phenos out of each one. I don’t know how big your grow is, but let’s say it’s 12 plants. Seed them out, and take about 5 clones from the strongest ones before you flip.. The amount of clones is dependent on if you do a perpetual grow, or just want to hunt down a couple of good phenos for your next run. You can reclone those clones if you need more time.
