Planning Ahead

My main concerns are odor control as well as heat and electrical safety. My questions will be at the bottom of the post.

My goal, assuming it is feasible after exploring the parameters, is to net 2 to 6 hundred a month growing connaisseur pot (not factoring in initial investment but including ongoing expenses). (I would be selling to and maybe through my sister, niece and nephew).

I will experiment with some free seeds before ordering quality seeds and I know I'm going to have to invest some significant money but I don't want to waste too much buying stuff that won't do the job longer term due to my financial situation. So, if I'm going to grow, I want to start with the beginnings of a permanent system.

My late husband used to do some woodworking so I am not afraid to do some work putting things together. I still have some of his basic hand tools so if I need to build something I can do it as long as I have good instructions. I've assembled furniture and put up shelves. I know what a molly is. I changed the power supply in my computer. I'm not strong but I usually find ways to manage.

I will be moving within the next six months into a low-income seniors apartment building in Montreal, Quebec, the Plateau area to be specific. Because it's a low income building heat and electricity are included as part of the rent. The building will most likely be one that was built around the 1970s. Drawing the equivalent electricity that would be used by a washer/dryer won't be a problem but a lot more than that could bring unwanted attention. Once a year a general inspection is done but does not include opening closets etc. I get a couple of days warning before the visit. A light pot smell, as though I had smoked a joint, wouldn't be a problem. Other than that I don't have any visitors. If I am going to construct stuff I would prefer to do it while I am moving in.

I'm a bit nervous about high heat fixtures that draw a lot of power because I am not sure about the quality of electrical wiring in apartments of that age and because I don't know if I would be drawing a noticiable amount of power. I am leaning towards using a combination of high quality florescents and LEDs incombination.

Aeroponics combined with a sog system seems to be my best bet.
Although I know it is more challenging I plan on growing sativa because I prefer it.

The apartment will be a one bedroom, living room, and kitchenette. There is a possibility of having a small storage room about 6 by 8 but it's more likely I will only have closets. Bedroom and hall closets about 2' by 5' and a linen closet around 2' by 3' is more likely what I will get. I also have 3 cheap particle board cabinets that are 32' w 16' d and 64' h. I have a lot of Ikea Ivar shelving that is about 35" w, 20 d and about 7 feet high. It looks like this only mine is bigger. http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/S49824326
I thought I might be able to enclose a couple of these as grow closets.

The usual internal heat of my living area is around 72f in the fall, winter and spring. It's unlikely that I will have any air conditioning so July and August could be a problem if the heat stays up at 80 or 90 for a few weeks.

This thread seems to offer a good general plan. https://www.rollitup.org/hydroponics-aeroponics/6592-get-harvest-every-2-weeks.html

My biggest concern by far is the odor. Is odor also generated (to a lessor extent) during the vegetative stage? I will not be able to exhaust air outside. How well do the charcoal filters work and can they just circulate air within the confines of the grow "closet"? Seeing as I will be home alone the grand majority of the time I could leave doors to growing closets open. Would that be livable or would I be overwhelmed by the odor? Would the odor drift out the windows or into the hall?

Am I right in assuming I don't have to devote as much space to the mothers and clones as I do to the flowering plants? What about drying and curing? Does it generate a lot of odor or take up a lot of space? Would lower kitchen cabinets be an adequate space for that? I already have lots of mason jars :).

I am a very light smoker but that could change if I am growing it myself. Nevertheless I think I would only consume about 10 to 15 grams a month myself. I'm assuming I could get about 200.00 an ounce, maybe more if the quality is really high, but I would have to deduct my ongoing expenses from that. Given the inevidable times that things go wrong, or the possiblity that I am over-estimating the price I would get, I am guessing that I would have to generate an absolute minimum of 2 ounces a month, 4 ounces would be much better in terms of dependability in generating a modest income to supplement my pension.

So, my biggest question is, am I being realistic? Given the confines of my situation would I be able to do this? Would I have to invest in uber expensive readymade grow closets or could I rig something up myself?

Approximately how much space do I need to generate 2 to 4 ounces from mother to dried product assuming I become a proficient grower?

This was a really long-winded post but any little comments you could offer would be much appreciated. I am not expecting anyone to provide a detailed plan. I just need some general direction to figure out if I should start investing in books and planning my set-up.

Thank-you,

Gisèle
