Please help with my aerogarden set up

Hello to everyone, I haven't grown any plants since 4-5 years ago when I had a 400W HPS stealth grow with soil which was very successful. I had a few grow journals on overgrow.com which was eventually shut down. Now I'm trying to help a friend that has a aerogarden deluxe, he swears by it, but he has already had 3 unsuccessful grows. He uses spring water for the water, he doesn't have any fertz. The PH can fluctuate a lot in my opinion, it goes from yellow to green and vice versa which is 5.2-6.6. I'm unfamiliar with any growing medium that's not soil, so I'm asking for your guys help so I can help him. What kind of fertz should we use? is the pump that comes with the aerogarden sufficient enough to grow 2 plants? Is the aerogarden even worth trying to grow with? At the moment he's been trying to grow Northern Lights x Haze. I have some pictures of what happens, the plants grow great for the first 10 days and than die out. They turn yellow/brown and crispy and that's the end of the story. Thanks for all the help!

does anyone know what's wrong with the leafs??
It looks to me like a Ca/MG problem. The very first pic looks like a plant who's roots need more oxygen though. Do you have an airstone in that Aerogarden? MJ Loves to have more oxygenated water.

The AG nutrients actually work pretty well, even for MJ. There's an AG Guide in the hydroponic growing section that should be very helpful.

Check your ph, use RO or drinking water instead of spring water, keep your water oxygenated, feed lightly and it should work out. I personally don't like the AG as it's just a rather expensive DWC system that's tiny and comes with a really tiny light.

Thanks so much for the help. Yesterday we went and bought a 30 gallon pump and a 6" air stone seeing that the plants needed more oxygen and learning that's why they would die out. Looking at the plants this mourning to see if the oxygen helped we discovered a bunch of slimy, nasty goo on the roots and some goo on the sponges. We put a teaspoon of peroxide into some fresh water and changed the water out. Here's some pics.

Did you clean and soak the air stone in ph water? it might be some kind of contamination from the new plastic. I have read that it is important to clean anything you put in the water with bleach or amonia, then soak it for 30 minutes in ph water. Just a guess.

I read the directions to soak the air stone after I had already put it in, so I just left it in. That may be the case though, I should of soaked the air stone. Well the water is changed out and clean now so hopefully they'll make a recovery. Thanks for the input.

They should. Now the airstone is properly soaked, haha. Did you fill it with distilled water this time?

I used tap water after letting it sit for 24 hrs. These are feminized seeds too, thank god, they've been through so much stress. lol.
I hope your tap water is pretty clean. My current batch seedlings responded really poorly to my tap water. RO water solved the problem and it's so little water for an AG. Please just go buy some water and avoid the troubles up front. Your plants looked like they were already having problems related to MG and Cal lockout. If you have a lot of Ca in your water it's going to kill'em.

Ok, thanks. I'll make sure to give them some better water.

The roots are still slimy and have brown spots. Is that root rot? Do I change ou t the water again with peroxide?
You should definitely add peroxide or something with beneficial bacteria to help in the fight. I have found a product called AquaShield works well or Taranta from AN (although there's a lof AN haters). The roots shouldn't be slimy.

Yeah I am not sure about using an aero garden but fungi and bacteria would probably help. Dosing with H2O2 will generally stall out fungi and bacteria for a day or two but not actually kill them. This stalling could still cure the problem as it gives a chance to benefitials to over run the infection.

Apply dilute H2O2 to effected areas and clean the inside of your aero with a bleach solution the next time you are changing it and possibly everytime you are changing it.

Rebenefitial fungi/bacteria for purchase.

Go with what ever is viable and cheap.. You find this shit all around your house, your bathroom, your backyard. Why would you want to spend like 40 bucks or something on something that is literally everywhere. Trichoderma mold inhabits everything anyways and is probably the most voracious mold I know. When you take this into account with a 24 hour incubation time you really should be able to add up that if your garden is tended to properly your myco herd will pwn shit pretty hard.

I also forgot that the best way to invite thrich infestation (it isn't an infestation unless you are cultivating fungi... ugh I hated trich for so long) is to sterilize your media.

So our last grow ended up dying out, possibly from root rot. I'm trying to get him to grow soil which I'm very familiar with but he's determined to make the aero garden work. So since our last grow we've upgraded to a new and better air pump, we've been using the nutrient tablets that came with the aero garden, aqua shield, and been monitoring the ph levels. This new grow started off healthy and now it's dying again. These are feminized seeds, so we can't kill too many more. My friend has been growing this plant for about 3 weeks now and here's some pictures of it. The PH is around 6.4, he's been watering it once a day with a gallon jug of distilled water that has a tablet of nutrients in it that came with the aerogarden. Over the last 3 weeks he's used 3 table spoons of aqua shield, he hasn't changed the water out since the grow started. Here's some pics, all the help is very much appreciated and for the hell of it here's some pics of a few buds we've been token on.

dang see that gel stuff thats bad news and fungus..... those plants are history.... run bleach through everything rinse everything really well.. then set it back up ad your water let it run for 24 hours to make sure all chlorine has evaporated.. strat over..

your aerogarden look like it does pretty much the same thing as my ez cloner ... but mine has a hellof a mister pump and i added 4 air stone s and a gaint airpump as well... i get 100 % clone success and they are so big in two weeks they have to be moved or the roots get all tangled up ...

everytime i see this slime get on something i dump the water and run a bleach solution for an hour os and cleasn everything including the foam plugs the start all over..

good luck
