I reccomend CB City and they have a good one for just over $100.
You can get handheld scanners, but a lot of time their battery life is small and their about the same price.

Here are a few shops you can look at that I reccomend.

CBCity.com
ClaysRadioShop.com

I buy from both places. GI Joe's might have some good ones.
If you get a handheld go with a Uniden BC72(xlt). They're about $100, and do all of the basic shit you'll need.

I used to have one that plugged into the car lighter port. You know the thing I mean.

It's funny listening to them.

Most police, all major cities and most minor ones too, have moved to a trunked digital system. In these systems the sound data is digitized and encrypted and then they use frequency hopping on top of that to make it even harder to listen in. These systems allow many, many more "channels" than the old systems that only allowed one conversation per frequency channel.

In other words the police scanners you can buy on eBay won't do you any good, they listen in on the old analog radio so all you'll hear are some old ass country bumpkin cops and maybe some fire / rescue. So now days you can't legally buy a system that listens in on the cops.

I used to own one. I bought it from Radio Shack, I believe it ran me about $100.00.
Just a basic police/ems scanner. I used it when my husband would go to work for the midnight shift in Balto City. There were so many shootings every night and I was terrified he would be next. I would sleep with that scanner right next to my bed, I was so happy the day I was able to put it away for good.
