Power circuits over capacity?

This is kind of a general question, but I'm thinking of upgrading my current setup 250w HPS with 850w portable A/C for cooling. I checked with my friend and he said this could overload my circuits. I have a little power meter thing though and its only clocking in at 8 amps right now, on a 20 amp circuit. I do have a guest house connected to the same power as the house, if I upgraded to a 600 watt light, would I be in any danger of circuits overheating?

no chance dude, I=P/V or current = power (350watts) / 120v (assunming your in the US) = 2.91 extra amps on your 20a Breaker. Youv still got 9amps to play with on that circuit ;)

Ok, good to know, and yes, I am in the US.

The main thing I am concerned about is more so the power from the street, because I have all electric appliances/heating, so does the guest house. So I guess what I'm wondering is if like the A/C, 600W light, heater, 2 stoves (1500w each), and like a hairdryer or whatever happened to be on at the exact same time, the place isn't going to burn down right? I just can't see how that would happen

You still dont have anything to worry about, your house will have dedicated circuits for the stove and most likely 2 or more "general" circuits feeding mixed parts of the house. Im an electrician by trade so i get people asking me if their house is gonna burn down or what not quite often but youd really have to have a LOT of appliances on at the same time to create enough heat in the cable to start a fire. In your situation youl be fine :)
