if i start w/distilled water w/appm of 0.00 and once i ph it it jumps up to 140-180 already. do i just sutract this from my ppm reading? or if i start with tap water that has sat out for 72hours i have ppm of 280ppm also is this subtracted from total. and tell me if im wrong but 400-600 ppm is per liter ?I use gallons so this equates to 3.78 liters x3=for three gallons and im at 11.38 litersx600ppm=6828 total ppms per 3 gallons.so approx 2276ppm per gallon ppm+ what i start with as far as ph ing water distilled vs tap which is up there at 280ppm im way off are'nt i? help!!!!

PPM is parts per million.
nothing to do with liters or gallons.

The PPM is what your nutes should be,
between 500 and 1500 depending on the desired ppm.

I don't know what nutes you are using,
but you need to look at the directions.

It should give you a dosage in ml/liter or teaspoons /gallon.

I use ml/gallon just to make measuring easy.

Looking at my bottle of AN Connoisseur,
it shows an application of 3.3 ml/L

This is 3.3ml X 3.8 = 12.5 ml/gl

I have an 8 gl rez,
so I use 100ml,
and get a ppm of 1000,
starting with 000ppm water.

300ppm of nutes is = to 1ml/liter
1ml x 3.8L x 8glrez = 30.4ml

If my water was 300 to start with,
I would use 3.8ml/gl less,
or 70ml total nutes for my 8 gl rez,
to get a finished rez solution of 1000ppm.

Thanks earl i was just reading that what you had wrote on another forum anyways i guess i need to do the ro if i really wanna do this right. my ppm meter only goes up to 2999 ok earl im an idiot im confused after i measure a sample of my water with nutes and phd its like 1900 and im into week 2 yikes where im confused is does ppm add because if i add 3gallons together ppms are out there so how do i measure my res which is 4 gallons and one other question my res level is above the netted pots i need to drop this below thepots? i think thats what you were saying on the other forum thanks

You need to flush your rez,
and get the ppm down below 1000.

You are going to fry your plants with 1900ppm.

but im using 1/2 nutes as it is and there only 11days old and they look really good see thats where im all screwed up earl doesnt ppms add so if you figure 400ppms for 1 litere of water of nutes and you have a 3 gallons doesnt that all add? its 400ppms of nutes per liter right

i wouldnt be able to add any nutes w/ that formula using tap water at 280ppmper gallon x 3 and im at 840ppm without nutes or evenph dropping the water because that adds 140ppm per gallonx3=420+840 and im at 1260ppm without nutes so i either deplete the plant of nutes or do the ro which really seems like the best way to keep track of ppms. by the way my avatar was grown the same no yellowing im not doubting you i just dont think i fully understand you

stop making this so hard, PPM = Parts Per Million. So if you have a liter at 240 ppm and you add it to 3 other liters of 240 ppm, you still have a 240 ppm solution. Because you have increased the total volume of both the water and the nutes in the same ratio. Did i make that clear enough? Good luck

earls right! youre still talking about quantity of solution.

Take away 1/2 of the ppm of tap water only (In your case 280/2=140). Add this 140ppm as part of the total ppm.

Add nutrient to correct ppm including the 140ppm of the tap water. THEN PH the solution. Always Ph after the nutients have been added

I was worried about what the manufacturers recommended dose was and added what they suggested....Even though it made my ppm exceed 1600....My leaf tips started to burn so, I flushes my nutes and have fed them only water since...(they exploded with growth using plain water)...I think this may be due to nutes that were absorbed into my hydroton clay pebbles because my water now is PPM 300 (I started with RO water at 10 PPM).....I have concluded that weed plants Thrive on a nute level much less than what the manufacturer suggests....I've read a lot of posts here about starting off slow with the nutes and increasing gradually to see what your plants like....However my impatience to grow 80 foot plants in a week led me astray. You may have to burn a few leaves...(If your thick headed like me)....I am very happy with the growth that 300 PPM has produced.....I also had the same question you had about combing or subtracting the PPM from you nute PPM.....I started with different water that had a PPM of 200 and after mixing my nutes ended up with a very high PPM....I burned my plants....If I were you I would not let my ppm go over 800. The starting ppm + Nute PM = Not to exceed 800....Be patient.....Hope this helps

thanks for all your help i figured out that it doesnt add to ppms depending on quanity ive got it now at1000ppms and learned something

If youre a novice grower then i would recommend a low ppm/cf/ec. Use nutrient at 50% strength,If the bottle of nutrient says 4ml per Litre, Then only use 2ml per litre. Do this for all nutrients and additives. You will suprised at the results.Once you have mastered 1/2 strength build it up to 3/4 strength. Reason being that if at any point of the grow you over dose, you will do harm and possibly kill it, and end up with nothing. Many novice growers use nutes at too higher ppm, thinking that it will raise their yield

Indeed. But I always have to fight the feeling that i'm doing my self out os something by not using more. It's a hard one to get your head around.
