Purple/Black Disfigured Growing Tips/Buds

My buddy has a problem. This is an outdoor grow.

Each year for the last several years, my friends plants Veg great. No Problems. Beautiful, huge 7ft tall 4-5 feet wide Mr Super Silver Haze. Weve been running the clone mother of this plant, inside for 3 years, and its as good as it ever was.

My friend made some seeds from F2s from this plant I made, and we have also grown at least 25 out inside and never any purple/black.

He then crossed my F2 with his 1988 NL1/HP x Hawaiian/ 88 NL5/Hz x 88 NL1/HP x RKS.

I grew 1 of these inside, and it did the same thing, and I NEVER have a PH problem. I use Promix BX. Mine also vegged normally

When they start to kick over into flowering, the growing tips, start turning Black/Purple... and not in a good way. This aint the normal purpling ect. It is totally deforming/disfiguring, and ruins the plant.

#1 my friend doesn't use lime, he should, but has been growing 35 years, and never had to use it, and has never had this problem. The new forming buds/tips/leaves look like the plant has bud rot. But like I said. I ran a tester inside, and it turned Black

I'm still guessing that its some kind of nutrient lockout, or it could be that his NL1/HP has a virus that's passed on, and not visible until they start budding.

Ive told him I think it could be PH/Nutrient lockout problems. Could it also be possible that it may have a Calcium/Mag/Phosphorus deficiency because No Lime PH troubles ect??? Causing deformation ? I'm also sure that more nutrients are locked out, IF PH is the problem. Hes also yet to run a PH test.

Any Ideas ???

But I'm still skeptical about PH as I said, I ran 1, and it turned black, and my PH was good.

All his stuff is from seeds.

His plants grow like weeds until they start to flower. Then they start turning Black, to really really Deep Purple, and are also deformed.

But they give no hint of anything in veg. No apparent deficiencies at all. Then Bam. When the light period outside is enough to trigger them, starting at the growing tips, they turn deep purple/black/deformed, and ruined.

Also that's not the only strain doing it.

Afghani #1 is doing it, and Cherry something or other from a dutch seed company is doing it. Mr Nice Shit. They are all doing it...

Thats what drives me to think its PH/Lime, nutrient lockout of some kind.

He did lime some, and they haven't done it so far, but I'm not holding my breath, as the Cherry were slow to turn black. They only turned last week.

Yeah.. i cant speak from direct experience with that as i stick to inside but if multiple strains are affected, but send a soil sample out to rule that problem out. Usually there are local extensions the samples can be sent out and processed on the cheap..

I just had my first grow using well water. Every water i ph down but otherwise my plants are thriving off the stuff. But I still plan on sending it out soon just to get the mineral content. Shit, maybe i save a few pennies on feed..

Nope.

My buddy also has it again this year. 200 plants. Sometimes the recover to a point, but I aint smokin nothin that has a potential bacterial infection. No smokin Bacteria for me.

Im on a couple other forums speaking of this, and general consensus is that it is a Phytoplasma/Bacterial Infection from Bugs. Mainly Leaf Hoppers, but also others involved.

This also passes on to the seeds if anything survives, and is bred.
It also happens in both Promix BX, and soil in the ground. some Miles Apart.

This NEVER happens using the same genetics inside.

Thanks, that helps a lot actually. I posted pics on reddit and someone casually mentioned that it looked like I had leaf hoppers. Also have a big japanese beetle problem this year in my area. I think this is the last outdoor grow for me, it's now legal for me to grow so I'm bringing it inside, so much easier to control. Thanks for the reply.

I am having the same exact problem happening with different plant. Thought about the soil have been using fox farm. It doesn't seem to affect all of them just a few. Desperately trying to remedy to keep the plant. Love to know what it is.

Anyone still having this problem? Ive noted some other people on a couple other forums are reporting this problem.

My buddy lost 500 more this year, and willl be lucky to get even a few ounces. He tested the soil for PH, and added Calcitic Lime, and Dolimitic lime. Soil is now 6.3-6.5. Up from 5.8. Plus this is also happening in Promix BX in containers outside. It never happens inside. This is happening in a bunch of different strains.

Totally fucked a few strains that cant be replaced like the Crickets, and Cicada gear. I bought them, and gave them to him. Plus some other strains.

Every fucking growing tip is turning purple black and twisted. Some plants are 8 feet tall. Huge plants. But theyre junk now, and he may have already just pulled them up.
The Cherry AK47 had the least casualties.

Maybe 5 plants out of over 500 didnt get affected. But the season aint over yet, and they still could turn Purple/Black.

Looks like everyone that contributed to this tread have been gone for at least 3-5 years. Weve had it every year since I started this thread in 2017. And this years the worst. Very first saw it in 2014-2015. Have lost thousands of plants in 7 years.
It also seems to happen right before, or just starting budding, and quickly spreads. I still think its caused by bugs. Possibly Learf hopprers, or Plant Hoppers. Plany Hopers are evrywhere in our neck of the woods. The Green Triangle looking ones. Weve also used Permethrin early on. One time.

I have encountered this issue every year for the last 3 years outdoors in MA... at first I thought it was from red ants, because I basically grew on top of a large nest, but this year I got rid of the ants and I have the issue once again. Doesn't matter what the strain is, I do different genetics outdoor all the time...

A couple of mine are doing this.. i havent figured out the answer yet.. some sorces say its a phosphate problem and other sorces think it maybe purple curly top virus..
Its not affecting the whole plants,, just a couple tops..
