I have been growing autos for a few years now, mainly lowryder strains by the joint doctor especially purple gem. Autoflowering strains are typically dismissed by growers as not very potent or small yields. This couldn't be more far from the truth. The truth is that Auto's such as purple gem can be grown in a way which surpasses regular photoperiod strains in yields and potency.....here's my strategy..
My strategy consists of using a dual chamber grow box as pictured here...http://www.pcgrowbox.com/seedling-and-vegetative-box.html to start the plants under 18/6 using 1/4 gallon square containers. I can fit 16 plants in this grow box and keep the plants in there for 2 weeks or until I can filter the males from the females. Once i throw the males out, I immediately start a new plant to take its spot. The females then go into the flowering tent under a 1000w HPS and are transplanted into 1 gallon containers. I can fit 24 females under my 1000w hps. The purple gem strain I grow finishes in 8 weeks or less. I typically yield one ounce of dried buds per plant, sometimes more and sometimes a little less. Since auto's stay on 18/6 the whole time, I can continuously keep popping new plants in my flowering room from my grow box. Purple gem makes beautiful purple trichome covered frosty buds everytime. I recommend using a separate box to pollinate a female so you have unlimited seeds to keep the cycle going.
A huge benefit to using autos over regular strains is that you do not need 2-3 separate rooms for clones/veg/flowering, you really only need one room on 18/6. This saves a lot of space, money, and equipment. Auto's are the way to go especially for sea of green style grows. Purple gem shows sex after 2 weeks from seed, finishes in 8 weeks from seed, and produces eye catching purple buds. I also recommend using Co2 for these guys.
Attached is one of the smaller purple gem plants which yielded 1 ounce of very dense purple buds. This is at 7 weeks from seed NO NUTES. Generally I get slightly taller plants, but this represents a classic dwarf.
