Yup that's the easiest method, so if you're using your 400W hps in flowering, it would be 12h per day with 30 days in the month so: 12 x 30 x (0.4 x $)
Electricity prices are usually expressed in Kw/h = 1000W, so your lamp would be 0.4 Kw.

The actual Kw price varies quite a lot from country to country, for example where I'm from it's around: Kw/h=0.42$ so my cost for a 400W used only in flowering would be 160$, monthly.
Yes, that's fucking expensive.

Here are some comparative figures of Kwh:

Sorry for not getting back sooner. .4 x12 equals 4.8. 4.8 X 30 equals 144. 144 x 42 cents equals $60.48 per month. I get my hydro for 8 cents a kw. I'm assuming since it's a mh/hps you're using it for budding.

Dude 160 a month for a 400 watt I rather grow outdoors or use led lighting. That's crazy expensive

I think there is a mistake here.

On the numbers on the link, say California at 15.3. I would do 12 x 30 x .4 x 0.153 = $22.03 a month. That sounds right.

Nope, I don't live in the US.
Re-did my calculations, and I messed up in the conversion rate. :?
A Kw/h is in fact 0.268€ = 0.36$ (and not 0.42).
If I rectify the monthly cost for a 400W, it would be $51.6. Not quite the same!!
But still expensive enough for me :-(

these threads always confuse me. my power charges are broken into two groups: "delivery services" and "supply services". if i want to figure out how much i'm actually paying for electricity i have to do 10 minutes of math. (peak/off peak, weekend rates, etc. gag.)

i know the easiest way to figure out a *general* rate of what you actually pay is to take your total for a given month, subtract any taxes, and divide by the amount of kwh you used.

example: this month my bill was $77.85 (no taxes). i used a total of 534 kwh. 77.85 ÷ 534 =.1348

so i pay about .13 per kwh. i run a 400w hps myself on a flower cycle all month. this is where i get confused. i know that a 400w would be represented by .4

would the formula be .13 x .4 x 12 x 30 = 18.72 ??

therefore, if i'm also running a 360w t5 on an 18/6 veg cycle, to calculate that cost i would represent the 360w with .36

so .13 x .36 x 18 x 30 = $25.27 that i spend to run my veg lights. funny that i spend more to veg than to bloom. i should do something about that.

if i add what i spend on veg and bloom it comes out to 44 bucks. this means that more than half of my monthly power bill goes to my grow

if i'm using faulty math someone please point it out because i don't care for those numbers
:?

Your math is good, and unless I misread your post you do pay more to veg than to flower :o
Then again it's not that surprising, as you have 360W in Veg compared to the 400W in flower = not a great wattage difference. But since you power your T5's 18 hours a day compared to the 12 hours for you HPS, there's your difference.

.1621 x 2 x 12 x 30, thats me with 2 1000w hps running at 12/12, thats 116.712 for just the bud lights, not to mention all the florescent for veg (4 4ft t8s) and the fans, 3 atm, and the pumps, 4, and the air pumps (12). Glad I have roomates that think its about 100$ difference a month (thats what I pay extra)

Here in Florida it's .12 per kwh. I run 2 1000W HPS in alternating 12-hour shifts, so it's like running 1 lamp 24/7. Rates are .12/kwh for the 1st 1000kwh and .132 for each kwh above 1000.

So I use 24kwh per day, 30 days a month = 720 kwh per month. at .12 per kwh it's $86.40.

BUT, my power company charges .132/kwh for all electricity used above 1000kwh. And, the electricity used by the HPS is definitely on top of all the normal usage, so it's actually costing me 720*.132=$95.04

Not even a blip on the radar, and certainly not worth the risk of trying to steal electricity from a neighbor.

I'm just sayin.....:-)
