Ok so my HPS light has been working fine.I bought it used on Ebay and they said everythign in it was brand news the wires, the bulb everything.Been using it for 2 weeks without a problem and then alst night i accidently bumped the timer and it shut off but wouldnt turn back on for a few minutes.and then today it shut off without me int eh grow room by itself and then was making a buzzing nioise again like it was last night,so i unplugged it for 3 minutes then plugged it back in and its fine. What could cause this?i was thinking the bulb but its brand new only 2 weeks old so i dont know why that would be bad, when its buzzing the bulb flickers though?hopefully its not the ballast cause all teh wires are brand new they said.and info would be repped

What type of ballast are you using? Sounds to me it might have over heated, also most ballast have a internal protector that if it turns off it won't turn back on for 5-10 minutes. The flickering is normal i have a brand new ballast does the same thing.

Thanks for the info, its a magnectic ballast i believe, def not digital. Its in an old case the wires adn everything were supposed to be brand new.is it common for them to overheat?its the first time in 2 weeks that its happened

Usually they dont. What is the temp where the ballast is? You also might want to try and run a fan on it that might help

the temps are around 80 degrees on average never above 81.the ballast got extremely hot when i had the door closed in my grow room but now i keep it open a crack it used ot be 103 in there now its 80 so im pretty happy about that.hopefully it dosent happen again.I will put a fan on it today thanks

i have a sunsystem 10 400w (2 of them) and theyre equipped with something that wont let them turn on for a few minutes after theyve been turned off. nothing wrong with it.

To me it seems very strange that the wires are all new but its in a old case makes me wonder.... but anyways the fact that the first sign of trouble was when you bumped the tiwould start there. Make sure all connectios are fully seated and well connected, is timer a inexpensive type? if so might be bad. Bulbs do go bad even new ones so if you can get a backup and try it, always a good idea. And ya the noises sound normal. Back to my first statement about the "new wires" the ballast may be going bad and whoever sold it just put a fresh coat of wax on a lemon so to speak.

Yea don't turn it back on right away you need to let it cool down for 15 minutes before re-igniting it. I can't believe nobody has pointed this out. Restarting a bulb that is still "hot" severely lowers the life of the bulb, and greatly damages lumen output.

that is correct, you bumped the timer and that turned off the lamp, it wouldn`t reignite again as the bulb was so hot the ignitor in the ballast presumed that the lamp was still lit as you having switched it back on so fast and this is a built in safety measure, i have a golden rule i wait 20 minutes before i reignite them, if they do reignite damage will occur a little time can save a lot of money and grief.

K thanks guys for hte info.I wont turn it back on like taht if it happens again.gonna be purchasing 2 replacement bulbs for it when i get the money later this week.

The timer is a nice digital one and it works pretty well

Yea I have an analog timer but I've bumped it before as well, turning the bulb off. My first go round I did that a couple times but restarted it instantly, and the bulb burnt out in the middle of my 2nd grow causing plants to go without (HPS) light for a day. Definitely recommend having backups like you said! I do not have a photometer, but i noticed the new bulb was much brighter (same bulb brand) than the one that had just burnt out, leading me to believe that even before it kills your bulb completely, it damages the lumen output enough to notice with the naked eye (a lot i would assume since it's so bright)

well the bulb is currently the same brightness as it was when i first got it brand new so i dont think i messed it up yet,but thanks for the info.will def have replacements soon as hell.how long do hps bulbs last on average?im looking to use one per grow at least hopefully at most 1 and a half lol.thanks man

I am an electrician, and I deal alot with high bay metal halides and high pressure sodiums. I have changed thousands of ballasts. All magnetic. The ones we use in grow rooms have special long distance ignitors. The ones you see in parking lots, or street lights, have ballasts built into the light housing. We do this so we can move the ballasts out of the room, for heat reasons. I have used digitals inside my room with no noticeable heat problems. But I went back to magnetic, outside the room, because anyone can rebuild a magnetic ballast, parts are easy to order online or at your local grow shop. Digitals have no replaceable parts. In my job I come across ballasts, lamps, you name it, that don't work right out of the box, or only last a very short amount of time. New doesn't mean much. I also have some that have lasted years and years trouble free. I have been an electrician for 15 years, I went through a 5 year union apprenticeship, and I can tell you that, metal halides and high pressure sodiums , or HID lights as they are called. Wont come back in right away after having lost power, they need to cool down as others have said, but I have never heard that it will damage them. I don't believe that to be true. If someone has had lamp issues it is probably an isolated issue, like a weak/bad lamp to start with. HID lights are temperamental. If you lose power I say turn them on asap, they will come on when they are ready, it can vary from 5 to 15 minutes. Hope that helps. If you have troubles with that ballast try the capacitor if it goes off and on, or the ignitor if it won't fire at all. The windings/coil hardly ever go bad, if they do it's from EXTREME heat. In excess of 100 deg. You would be very surprised how easy those parts are to replace. Just go wire for wire.
