Question about pH in soil.

Hello everyone!

Some time a go I bought some cheap soil ph, water and light meter. It's total crap and I throw it out, because it doesn't show real stats. That's why I bought water pH meter.. That yellow one and calibrated it.

This is a question.. If I water my plant with 6.8 pH, will my soil be 6.8 pH? Or how does it work? I saw in "Buds for less" that if you add water which has a 7.0pH my soils pH level will be smaller or higher.. Could you explain how it works.

Best wishes, Weedburger.

The liquid tests kits are meant for your soil and water. So put soil and water in the kit, pill it, shows color.

If that's not what you're talking about(forgive me your English is terrible)after you water your plants, there's run off at the bottom check the ph of that water.. And that's what the plants are getting..

Also... No need to check ph with organic soil and emusions(Plant food)

Okey, sorry for my English, will try better.

I'm talking about this pH meter:

Don't worry about it. Just giving you shit. Welcome to RIU.

Yes, water the plants and check run off water. The ph of the run off water will tell you what the plants are getting. Wether it goes up or down is where you need to adjust the water before you give it to the plants.

Fuck is WRONG. ph is very much important in soil. With Organic soil and organic plant food. There is no need to ph

Ya you for sure want to be able to check your PH. Most tap water will be 7ph depending were you live, but what you can do is test your normal water that you use to water your plants then test the run off when you water, subtract your run off from your tap water then you know what "buffer" your soil has and you should be good to go.

I personally think testing runoff is a waste, because all you are really testing is your feed water as it runs through the pot. It really never has time to truly interact with your soil as it flows past the medium. I have a soil test kit that I use weekly, which also give me a NPK reading at the same time. But different strokes for different folks. Peace

LOL amen, dont worry about checking your PH !?!?! shit might as well not check your gas tank or your cars tires.
I think what he meant is to check the pH of the water, and not to worry about checking the soil.

And he does have a point; when I started out a few months ago, I bought a burpee "soil pH detector" and it was a load of balls. It didn't work at all, especially not for what I was trying to do, adding nutrients and whatnot.

You need to check the pH of the water going in, not the soil. Sure, there are ways of checking it (water and soil at the same time), and checking the runoff can tell you what type of change is taking place IN the soil (by whether the run off is higher or lower), but at the end of the day, what is going to matter (in terms of your garden) is knowing what the pH is going into the soil.

And by the way, I run fox farms with lime (organic) and feed with roots organics nutes (organic), and I still have to check my pH. So whoever said "no need to check pH of organics" isn't totally true. Maybe with super soil you don't need to worry about it, but my grow is 100% organic and I have to stay on top of my pH or I have problems.

No, there actually is a group of people here who believe that soil magically regulates itself, and that PH-ing the water is completely unnecessary.

Yeah you don't have to check your PH because you're watering with distilled water, which already has a PH in the high 6's

Okay, but after I add the Ferts to the water? Never..

I honestly never cared to check it. But then I came across someone who bluntly said, you can't over feed with Emulsions... So I took that to Heart

A good balanced soil will buffer your water in most situations, though water quality can vary widely depending on where you are, or even the time of the year you will see some fluctuation.

Right or wrong, I personally have gone to only checking the pH of my run off every week or so since I have a pretty good idea of what it runs and I amend my soil to keep a good buffer. I also have been feeding using organic teas and top dressing which seems to work well.
