Question about stems.

Hey everyone, this site is awesomeee.

I germed a seed about a week ago, and it broke soil about 4 days after planting it.

It just has its first set of leaves and the stem is very tiny... Flimsy looking, really. I don't know what that means, if anything... There was even some grass blades growing in the cup... I really don't want this plant to die and i plan on getting some proper soil mix as soon as i can afford it...

Is there anything i can do for my lonely, flimsy plant?

first plants arent gunna be big nd strong at first u gotaa start some where ..flimsy is good at this stage..anyways..theres only 2 things u can mainly do to help ur plant 1. water it but not too much wait until soil is dry before watering..2. needs lots of light ...and r u growin indoors or outdoors.

Get an oscillating fan gently blowing over the seedling, just enough to wobble the stem a little, but no more than that, and get your light as close as possible without giving the seedling to much heat, in a week or so your stem will have strengthened right up.

And pull the grass blades out of the soil, they will be pulling nutrients from the soil that your weedling could be using.

Thanks for the info guys. You people here on the forums are very helpful. I have a fan i plan to set up tomorrow so that will hopefully help some with the stem strength. Right now i have 1 40w CFL on it, but i have another i could add at anytime. I thought it wasn't a good idea to have the seedling exposed to a large amount of light, but would 2 40w cfls hurt? I think there 2600k lumens each. I plan on getting a 400w or 600w HPS set up in the comming weeks, as the cash flow starts comming a little more steady... really hoping for a girl seeing its the only seed i have right now

No the two cfls will be fine, but one will be fine for the first week or so then turn the other on.

You can give them pretty much as much light as you want with cfls as long as you can control/get the heat away from the seedlings.

A 400 or 600w hps will be much better but id still start seedlings off with the cfls for the first week at least to give them a gentle start.

heres a pic of two of my seedlings that popped the soil yesterday, il be bringing the light down half an inch per day until its about 1-2" above the tops then keep it at that distance throughout veg, lighting is a 125w blue spec eco-lite (high power cfl) in a week il be turning the other one on.

Niice! I will have to check out your grow, seeing as i am gonna try and start a SOG soon. I like the way al b. fuct does his, but i am still trying to figure out if i wanna use a ebb n flow system or a DWC... I'm leaning on the ebb n flow, though. Thanks for the helpful info!
