Question of growing containers.

So just wondering, growing in pots(example 1 gallon) are a standard medium; but would there be any really noticable negative effects on the plant growth if lets the roots were grown in a medium that was very short but wide.

So basically a similar area, but the majority of the space is in the horizontal directions. Would the roots grow downwards, hit the bottem then expand to fill the medium without major effects on the plant?

Im very curious on this, thanks!

That's a good question, I've never been cramped on vertical space so five gallon buckets work fine or me but if i had a shorter space I'd wanna use shorter, wider tubs.

from what i understand is that cannabis needs to be able to develop a strong lateral root system. meaning it needs to be able to grow roots straight down. i am not positive about cannabis, but with bonsai trees you cut the main lateral root (tap root) to keep them short. once this root no longer is growing straight down, the plant stops growing taller. i would guess that if you planted cannabis into a pot that is too shallow, you would end up with a very short, root bound plant. if you have issues with the height of your grow space, look into low stress training or supercropping. the tie down method has worked wonders for me, and i suggest that you use it on your grow. good luck!

your roots will crawl i dont think u would have a problem
So so far I shouldnt have a problem?
Hmm are you sure about the lateral root thing? I would think that it would be the amount of roots grown that would vary the size of the plant, not the direction but i could be wrong.

I think the lateral root growth would be more about stability in the ground.

Any more insight?

The tap root is the main thing for weed. Plants need deeper roots not shallow. You would be better off with a four inch square pot that was ten inches deep rather than a ten in pot four inches deep.
