So I'm thinking of buying the 'ultimate grow kit' from nirvana. Anyone have any thoughts on that? Is it really necessary?

No, the "ultimate grow kit" is not required to grow marijuana. Nirvana's been in business for more than a decade and has won competitions with their genetics. You never know what condition seeds bought from a given distributor will be in, however. While Nirvana's legit, that doesn't guarantee quality.
