Yes side lighting is a good idea.
Especially when using CFL's.
Just as long as heat is not an issue.

i hae 4 40 watt lights above my plants, and 5 26 watt cfls all around the sides of my plants. yet they still reach up, but at the same time, the buds on my lower branches are nice and
big too. also i have noticed that with the fan going the lights seems to get hotter? does anyone else notice this?? or maybe im just imagining things....

Chances are that your not exhausting your heat properly.
Try moving your fans.
yeah i guess. i have the closet closed with the fan blowing on the wall in there and then circulating. air is sucked through the bottom of the door but i dont like to have the door open because there so much light its seeable. is this a problem?

You should worry more about getting air out then getting in.
Maybe cut a hole in your closet ceiling and put a fan over the hole pushing out.

ah ok, i thought it was just air movement that i needed. i have been opening the closet 2 or 3 times a day and totally refreshing the air supply. but the thing is for some wierd reason it just happened that my lights are on at night time. when im sleeping. is it alright to open the door for 1 minute about 4-5 times while its supposed to be dark? ive only been doing it about twice a day. they seem fine. outdoors plants survive hour long thunderstorms so they should be alright eh?

thanks for the help and knowledge by the way. much appreciated.

This will almost certainly cause hermaphrodites.

i would say 18/6 is the safest route for auto flowering. because like all living things they need a rest sometimes.

for flowering you need like 2700k bulbs, for vegging 6500k but i used 5000k bulbs for veg and it worked out just fine even though 5000k is a spectrum that apparetnly is hard for plants to absorb. but they worked just fine. for veg you need like 5000-6500k for veg 2700k are perfect and you can find them pretty cheap and wal mart.

this is for cfls. i dont have an expereince with other bulbs.
