Regular seeds or fem?

Thanks to them all!!!

So I have successfully made my own fem seeds using the colloidal silver and sts method. Now I'm going to place a large order from Herbies and will be trying to create some of my own strains.

Is it better to buy regular seeds and use the pollen from them, or buy fem seeds and take a clone and get some fem pollen from it, to create something?

I would only use fem seed from strains that I couldn't get regular seeds of. Especially female seed from selfed plants will have a limited genetic representation of the strains full genetic profile.

Just something to consider.
Making your own strain isnt just chucking some pollen on a girl and calling the seeds she makes a "new strain". That is pollen chucking...or cross-breeding.

Making your own strain invloves running the new seeds through a few generations. If youre a good breeder you will make sure to pop lots of those new seeds and pheno hunt, to choose good males to put with good females through each new generation. I believe 8 (generations) is the magic number...

If you dont plan to go the extra mile and youre just going to chuck some pollen and make a cross breed or two ...then... then just dont. All that does is homogenize genetics (like making "swamp water" when you mix 5 kinds of pop in your 7-11 Big Gulp cup). Theres way too much of this going on already and really good genetics are being lost FOREVER because of it.

Dont become a part of that problem. If you want to make a new strain then do it properly....or dont bother doing it at all.

Or at least keep the pollen chucker seeds to yourself so they dont polutte the gene pool.

There's nothing wrong with throwing some pollen around to see what happens. As long as people throw at least a few females in with their male counter parts to preserve the original strain and properly store the seeds we wouldn't have to worry about all of these true breeding strains going the way of the Dodo like so many have.

As long people don't just keep relying on the one or two plants from first or second generation crosses homogenization shouldn't been an issue. Unfortunately that is the trend just like you were saying. Way too much selfing and backcrossing. The best thing prospective new breeders could do is to actually use a proper selective breeding process to bring some consistency and stability to new lines but also preserve the original strains like you're talking about.

As long as enough people do these things in their breeding processes we can advance the discovery of new combinations of genetics without losing anything.

Thats the trouble... people are cross breeding and then selling the seeds as a "new strain".

The people at DNA genetics for instance. I bought some LA Confidential fem seeds from them.... out of six seeds I got three phenos and a runt, of which two hermied. Completely unstable, as a result of not taking time to stablize the cross through a few generations.

The only breeder i trust right now is serious seeds. I have cracked over 100 AK-47 seeds from them. I've only ever seen three phenos... which were quite similar really.
Same with white russian... 150 plus seeds popped... three phenos, of which one was really different from the other two.

Those are stable. I'm doing a seed run on the White Russian right now. That will be followed by a seed run of the AK-47. Going to keep those strains alive as long as i can.

"Stable" is a favorite of mine. So many people ask if a strain is "stable" when they mean to ask if has a tendency to turn herm. It's ironic since a strain with a consistent tendency to turn hermaphrodite is actually stable in consistently carrying that trait.

Well... i use the word stable to describe the consistency of the seed, in terms of what it produces for phenos.

3 phenos out of 100 seeds = stable
Vs
3 phenos out of 6 seeds = unstable (shitty breeder)

Like you say... if hermi is a trait that carries through then it is a stable strain....that hermis...lol

You're using the word by it's proper meaning. Legally a plant variety can't even be called a strain unless it's true breeding g with plants bring consistent in growth threw all stages and producing a consistent crop.

What are you seeing for finishing times with the 3 AK47 phenos?

Ive seen two consistenly. One a bit stretchy but not bad and the other a bit less stretch. Both fantastic yielders... and these two are usually done in 65ish days from flip if you keep them healthy all the way through. Above average indica high. The afghan part for sure.

The third pheno stretches like a mo-fo. Yields like a usual indica, but the smoke super smooth kinda sandalwood taste and is more a heady spacey high and it takes 75+ days from flip. A sativa dom for sure... mostly thai i think. Colas always flop on this one. I think this one may be a close decendent of the award winner ak47 way back.

This is what i expect for my money and ive been lucky to get that so far and for reasonable money.

Check out Peak seeds if dont know about them already. His prices will blow you away. Has about 8 strains that are rock solid and interesting. They all come as described. The Blueberry is the real deal.

Dj Short is selling seeds under the name Old World Genetics if you want to get the true original blueberry. I'm on the hunt for the original Hawaiian Sativa.

From the bit i just read he spent some time in canada...probably BC i bet because that is ground zero for blueberry (which is DJs). I remember that from the 80s. It was one of the original purps...

So id be willing to bet the Peak seeds blueberry is close to the original.

I'm sure it is. It's a PNW strain going back decades. He was established here in Eugene. His son is running the next gen side of the business under the name JD Short.

Edit; he goes by JD Short but the seed company is Second Generation Seeds.
