I'm so excited I'm in the final stages of finishing my 3D printer If you guys are not aware of this new technology, its truly groundbreaking. Much like a normal 2D printer uses ink and paper, 3D printers use plastic which is melted and deposited in a normal 2D fashion. Once each layer is complete, the machine raises up to build another layer. This process is repeated until the object is finished.
This technology is very new and still in its infancy. The whole project is mostly open source, all the necessary information to build a machine is free and open to all. The hope is that people WILL copy this work, and improve upon it. I love the mentality of making and building the things we need in life. One day I fully see a machine of this sort building entire laptops, the sky really is the limit.
I invite all of you of the technological persuasion to look into this technology, and contribute if you feel so inclined. My hope is that I'll be able to fire up my machine and make some parts for a little extra income. This technology differs from the well known machining operations such as CNC, lathes and mills. Those machines remove material to reveal the finished project. This method produces almost no waste material whatsoever. I refer to traditional methods as destructive manufacturing, as opposed to this method which is constructive manufacturing.
