---> Root did a U turn <----

i was picking around the surface of the soil and saw the tip of the same root that u turned.
Will the plant make more shoots underneath and continue downwards?

--------------------------------OLD

White widow, New miracle grow soil, 250W cfls, 80-86F, no nutes. Day 8, not in airtight space, 0 fans until this post. Im guessing temp stunted growth

Both of my plan'ts roots did a u turn. The root goes down maybe 1/2th inch and hooked back upwards. The topsoil is very soft and loose so it had problems taking place. Growth is very slow but small leaves are green and showing progress. Both white widows did the same thing i reseated the other one and its doin fine now. For some reason this one is having a bit of a hard time getting the leaves out. I can see they are growing between the cotyledons. They just wont spread. Im on day 8. I had high temps for few days during early growth 80-86. Ive cooled down to 75 now and waiting to see if i see any improvement. There not yellowing just very slow. Im guessing mabey there just trying to settle a good root structure. What you guys think

i dont get what u mean abou the u turn and if only 8 days old they grow slow for awhile then they start to take off and the temps arent th eprob 86 isnt that bad my room is always at 84 or lower

The root hooked back up to the surface so i dug it out gently and tried to reseat the root tip under the soil so it didn't have to waste more energy turning back around. The tip did some crazy spiral and it seems to be heading down in the right direction when i dug around it and checked today. Hope i didn't cause it too much stress. The soil is loose so its easy to move around.

The white widows are close to soil. Which is good. One of the WW is strugling to gain upward position and open cotyledons. I will watch them. Got my temps down to 71 right now 27% humidity.

There not yellowing and seem to show very small amount of growth everyday. I'm guessing i just have to be patient.

I can't believe you're starting your plants out in such large pails. Is that normal for people to do or is that just a way to get around having to transplant later on?

+1

I've seen this on a few posts now. Commom beginners mistake I guess.

You should really start off in small cups and transplant later so the rootmass can develop better.

GL!

See. Ive always read less transplant in order to reduce stress. But i agree this maybe the cause of the problem. Im sure they will catch up. What you guys think? It shouldn't die.

There is no such thing as transplant shock, giving the roots more room to grow will not stress it as many people think

Im curious in the actual growth formation and strategy of a plant when in a cup vs in a large medium. What is actualy going to that causes the slow growth. Is it that in a cup the roots hit bottom then upward veg starts to occur? And when in a large medium roots drive deep until plant decides there is a need for leaves and further vegetation in order to prolong life?

I have had this happen to me before. You must have put the seed in the soil upside down. Where the radicle (root) sprouts from the casing should be pointed up towards the surface of the soil. The radicle then curls downward, anchors itself and pushes enough of the radicle through the soil and pulls the cotyledons up and shedding the shell. If the seed is planted with sprout side down the radicle will still curl until it realizes it's growing against gravity, and also pushing the cotyledons further away from the light dimly shining through the soil, and then makes a 'u-turn' and curls back downward.

yea i did plant my seeds down. Next time i will plant them sideways and save it 90 deg. I actually planted a seed straight in a 2 gallon no germ yesterday. I figured if plastic wrapped humidity dome it too will sprout no problem. It too may have initial slow growth.

I am learning from my actions and will be able to make better descision next grow. I apreciate all of your help. Not sure if i will create a journal. Perhaps when i am quite some ways into veg.

The last plant i grew was by accident. Threw bagseed in a pot with another ponytail mini palm tree. The seed grew and didn't want to quit. I hung a cfl over it and it grew. I 12/12 and was male. I barley did anything to the plant. I fed it chlorinated water and just watched it grow.
