Salvia Divinorum Grow

I thought id share with you all a plant Ive always thought a little special.

Salvia Divinorum, most of you have probably heard of this or seen some hilarious youtube video of smoking the extract. Salvia for those who didn't know is an interesting plant as its almost entire propagated by cuttings. Bringing this plant to seed is quite rare and germinating a viable seed even more rare. In nature it exists in a very small region of in the state of Oaxaca in Mexico. If it wasn't for botanical interests and the fact its a hallucinogenic plant this would otherwise be defined as an endangered species.

Growing this plant they say is rather difficult requiring high humidity, filtered light and continually moist well drained organic soil requiring daily misting to keep it alive. In reality this is a very difficult plant to learn to grow but a very easy plant to grow. I live in Calgary Alberta with incredibly dry air and has very short daylight hours in the winter with very long in the summer. Salvia does not like this.

above is two Ive been preparing for an outdoor grow. Your probably thing wtf these are almost dead, this is the furthest thing from the truth I purposely grew it in this manner to maximize foliage. Salvia grows very different from anything Ive ever tried to grow and this is the cause of most failures in growing it. As the leaves grow they grow to the conditions they are currently in. This plant was rooted about a year ago and placed in a window in my garage. It flourished in the summer but as the light decreased and I moved it indoor the lower leaves acclimatized to different conditions died and fell off. Over the winter its not uncommon for the lower leaves to fall off as new one grows getting taller and grosser looking.

The first picture is one I prepared for winter, heres how you do it.

The new leaves of this plant are starting quite happy and if it wasn't completely root bound they would have kept growing very well. First thing I did was transplanted to a slightly larger pot and a week or so later pinched the stems below the living leaves forcing a redistribution of hormones and sudden growth at the nodes. This isnt necessary but I like to give it a head start.

With these new shoots starting its time to top this plant to maximize foliage before it get planted in outdoors for the summer.

These ugly skeletons will recover in almost no time at all and grow back completely lush and gorgeous, the cut tops will also re start my indoor garden for the following summer.

For any Calgary locals send me a PM if your interested in a cutting.

Ill update this the following weeks as it grows.

I`ve grown sally for the last 20 odd years. She will drop leaves if the air is too dry, try to keep the RH above 60% if you can. By the looks of the leaves, the soil is too wet, allow it to dry out between waterings. In the interest of security, you might want to take some new pics without the window in the shot :)

Any pearls from your 20 years greatly appreciated.
