Sand as top layer ?

Hi, I'm fixing to try my first indoor grow at the age of 70 . Read or saw where someone used about 1/2 inch of sand as top layer of soil. They said it helps keeps down pest from the other soil. Anyone doing this or has tried it? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi. I can't say that i have ever heard of using sand as a top layer. What kind of soil are u using? Most pest are pretty easy to get rid of. What kind of pest are you needing to get rid of?

some people use a layer of sand at the top of there pots to stop the scarid fly AKA fungus gnat laying their eggs on the roots which turn into maggots that eat your roots, bit of a waste of time. as when you water it gets mixed up with the compost, i dont worry about a few scarid fly but if you have an infestation a product called Nilnat will sort them out

I understand the concept.. we use perlite around our broccoli plants to keep out root maggots and other larvae..
Just used diatomaceous earth to get rid of fungus gnats in my grow.. so body puncturing technology does work..
Maybe a silica sand would work best!
