Science behind the Hollow stem= higher potency.

Anyone have any knowledge on this. I've read several botany books and read DJ short and Robert Clark's books and know they claim there is a correlation. Anyone have any ideas why this is true?

Never heard that claim that hollow stems equal more potency. I have seen that better light eliminates or reduces hollow stems. Had that happen just recently. Chop a THC Bomb cross that ran under my new light and there wasn't a hollow stem except for slight hollow-ness in one larger stem, in the others... none, solid.

I remember back when there was only basic weed around as a kid, usually grown by asians, atleast thats all i saw from everyone then but i remember this older friend at that time told me that this is how you tell if it is hydro or not. And on this asian bud that was floating around for a while had hollow stems so and i would imagine they grow the run their production as quick as possible thus being hydro. Maybe he meant that as a certain grade or he was just talking out of his ass but thats about all ive ever heard of hollow stems. I dont remember noticing myself having any but I grow in soil so he could be right but then again I cant say ive noticed hollow stems on any of the bud i grab these days either and its top quality. Potency? No idea, could be possible in allowing more nutrients uptake? how would u create a hollow stem in a plant? No clue

Hollow stems don't mean better potency. .I can say I know that from personal experience. . I have read some things on it.. it can be as simple as genetics. . Why are some people 7 feet tall?? I don't know it's just the way it is... Some growers talk about the hollow stems like it's a highway or a straw for the plant to suck up nutrient water..I'm not a botanist so I can't tell you exactly how a plant drinks water but I can almost assure you that's not the way it works! Imo hollow stems don't mean anything positive. . Their downside is that they are weaker and unable to support as much weight as a solid stem!!

The only correlation that I've heard explained was not necessarily that hollow stem equal more potent plant, but that if say you grow out ten seeds and 9 were stout and bushy and the 10th was a foot taller and had a solid stalky stem, then it was more likely to be expressing more of its "agricultural hemp" genetics and therefore less likely to have medicinal potency, but I think you've just got to grow it out to know for sure.

I checked some of the stems I have drying now and mostly only the primary stems are hollow. I heard that indoor weed usually has hollow stems vs. outdoor but it's just a rumor. Wonder if any outdoor growers would chime in??

I try to make sure all the cuttings I take as clones have the hole in the middle of the stem. But there is no magic here, just science. That's because a hole just means it is a larger cutting than one without a hole. An older branch. Experience says the larger clones do better. So better judge by size, eh? Good luck, BigSteve.

I have a sativa ....very very hollow stems in soil under 400hps. I'll let ya know results. Its a nirvana freebie and beat I can tell its their version of Maui Waui. Very very lanky and tons of bud sites. All very Whispy and and thin but it took her 3 weeks to show flower. I am in week 6.

The guy at the hydro store had told me once that a hallow stem was an indication that the plant was not getting enough cal/mg. If that is the case, I would seriously doubt that would be anything but bad.
