SCROG Qs

I plan on moving away from doing trees and give scrogging a try.
maybe i can cut my veg time in 1/2 without making big sacrifices in the weight dept.
one of my Qs is when to put the netting down and how long and when to flip the switch.
do i lay the netting just above the tops and let the plant grow into the netting?
OR
snug the net a tad below letting the tops barely poking into the net.
12/12, I seen some peeps lay the net and immediately flip letting the bloom-stretch grow into the net.
others veg while tops grow thru the net.
does strain influence any of the above?

Last time I scrogged I topped the plants once and threw the screen right on top, maybe 5-6 inches from the soil. I vegged a couple more weeks until it was filled up. Watering was a huge bitch and I definitely vegged to long. I got a shit ton of larfy nugs too. If I were to do it again I would get the plants into nice bushes first then put the screen about 6-10 inches above them then flower. Prune everything under the screen.

To my knowledge there is no substitute for veg time.

There are many ways to use a net, but the most common two I've seen are: letting the plants grow through the openings and the net separates the branches and supports the stems and bud weight. The other way to use one is in a SCROG -- and that is when you use the net to train the plants to spread out, exposing lower bud sites that can now grow vertically in direct light. When growing with a SCROG, it often helps to double net -- put a second one 8-12" above the first one (depending on the strain and how much it stretches) to support the colas that have been trained.

So you need to decide if you want to use the net to train and shape the plant, or just for support. And in each case, how high you start the net depends on how long you plan on vegging and the strain. Sorry, too many variables for a simple answer.

This is my current SCROG. I spread them out using the net, and then when they filled the net about 80% I flipped to 12/12. The first pic is what it looked like when I flipped, the second is what they look like now (about 12 days into flower), and the last one is a look below the net -- no need for there to be any leaves or small stems under there.

Dubekoms, I always lollipop the bottoms letting air flow do it's thing under and over the plants.

Humanrob, I was figured there would be plenty of variables to contend with.
I like having a couple options of using the netting to train OR support.
I'm thinking there'd be advantages of using these 20gal plastic washtubs I have to use when potting time comes around
I could put 3-4 plants in it, and train em to fill up the 4-5ft wide canopy I'll have,
the water probs and other things would be easier imo, Ive done it before and the plants love the room the 20gal tubs provide for the root system and I had super thick mainstems at the base.

down the road before i actually get to work with it but I'll have a basic plan down to work with.

I did my first scrog last run and pulled decent weight vs watt. (3.5 x 4 net, 600 w light and a pound dry). I grew my plants into the net and tucked them under. I used halos to help solve the watering problem. If I had of filled the net properly before switch I would of pulled more weight so an experienced grower like your self should do really well with some research.
