Second Grow, First DWC Grow 600W Nirvana ICE fem. Advice Please!

  • Wassup everyone. Im starting on my 1st DWC grow hoping to get a larger yield than my previous soil grow. I had one soil grow before and Yielded about 8-10Oz's Dry from 3 Plants. (2 White Widow, 1 blue mystic) in a 2x4x7 Grow tent with no scrog under a 600W HPS/MH. Which I thought was pretty decent for my first grow ever. Heres my new setup and I'm hoping to get a anywhere from 10-16Oz's DRY hopefully.

seeds: FEM Nirvana ICE, FEM Karmelo (Freebie)

    New Setup:

    Same 2x4x7 Grow Tent
600W HPS for Veg, 600W MH for Flower (I dont have a seperate flower tent, I just switch lights)
    AC Cooled Hood
    440 CFM Exhaust Fan
Huge Carbon Filter so I dont have to worry about smell.
Two 5 Gallon Homemade DWC buckets with Hydrofarm Drip Ring kit.
10" Net Pots with some hydroton.
    Fox Farm Trio Nutrients
    1.5" Rockwool Cubes
    Small Humidifier
Scrog Net for when plants grow some. (This will be a scrog grow)

Some CFLs to start out seedlings with for about a week or so.

Check out the beginning of my first soil grow here. (I didnt get to update much)

    Here is right before harvest

The thing im worried about is my pots being too big. I got 10" net pots because thats what was suggested with the 5 gallon bucket setup. (only bought 2lbs of hydroton because theres no hydroshop near me and I didnt know how much 2lbs in hydroton was. Turned out to be nowhere near enough, so I ordered 10lbs today)

Main thing is with my pots being so big and the rockwool cube being so small and starting from seedling, where would i place the rockwool cube in the net pot. Near the bottom, in the middle, or near the top of the hydroton? I dont want the small plant to be crushed by the hydroton or not be able to grow out of it, but i also dont want the plant to be so far up where the roots cant penetrate the hydroton enough to reach the water. Suggestions anyone?

    • Heres pics of my setup before i switch to HPS after they sprout and get leaves. The seeds were germinated in a cup of water, then the tailroots came out using the paper towel method and were transferred into 1.5" Rockwool.

Is my rockwool ok tho sitting under the CFLs like that? they currently are wet. I took them out of a PH 5.5 water soak a few hours ago then transplanted the newly germinated seedlings. Question is can i Just keep em like that and just dunk 1/2 the RW into PHed water every now and then?

hey man

look into clay pellets ..........u take the rockwool cube after u soak it and place it in the center once the base is full of clay beeds/pellets make sure u have it lvl with the top .......the roots work the way down tho the clay beeds going around and down...............for the frist week or so u want to have the water lvl high just below the basket ...as the plant grows u move the water lvl to the normal lvl(depends on the bucket) and start adding your feed ...........rem to always keep track of what u have put in and the ppm reading .....if u notice red veins means u need more of something in the npk scale .....u know what nurt burn looks like ..........the point of the clay beeds/pellets is to give it some place to grown in but also block ligth from hitting the water u will most likey remove some as the plant trunk gets fatter

if i have done the resreach correct the perfect ph is 5.8 for your system
feed on a photo u pick one line of products nutrients fallow there thin (may i say pick chemical organic will get bad smelly if not done correctly )
make sure u pick up micro food for the little buddies around the roots and a good ph meter (the water test drop kits not good for yours) .....bud enchancers bloom products get your list do your resreach to see if mix well with your nutrients

keep detailed notes ...........this is so u know the plants like and can do it again once master and for u to keep records to know best starting point for the next strain u want (if written in a book make sure hidden and only u know .....if on computer encryption with hidden..........the best passwords are sentences like the .........mynameisbobandiliketododrugs/iwasbornin1976/mywifeis24yearsoldforlast3years)

i am a sneaky bastard decrytion programs run words and numbers sentences are in the last part but after so many hours of tring they normally give up and move on (depending on the speed of the computer and power it can be anywhere from 30+ days to several hours military set up)

by the way u are running a combo of dwc and drip
dwc .......is when the roots just hang in the water with air bubbles come up in a nut rich water
drip ........is when u have a pump move the nut rich airired water up and then it flows down on the plant then back into the bottom mixxes up and comes back up

one of those 2 things can be removed .......i would go with the drip u can remove the water pump in the bucket and the feeding ring ........u keep the air stone

I have hydroton which are clay pellets, i just didnt order enough so im waiting for more to arrive monday and i will transplant then.

I also am using the Fox farm trio for my nutrients. I also have open sesame, cha ching, and beastie bloomz for flower.

How often should i expect to have to water the rockwool by itself?

depends on the amount of time for the clay pellets come

4 days then give it half a cup of water and they should be there (rockwool is hollow and has a very high water retention )

u only need to keep water in the rockwool untill u have it installed in the bucket system after that u want it to strat to dry out roots are forced to grow out looking and then they hit the water for the really good stuff

Thanks. The hydroton should be here tomorrow so ill put them in my drip system soon. But before I do that I should soak my hydroton in 5.8 PHed water for 24hrs correct. So that the clay doesn't mess up my waters PH. Then no nutes for about a week. Hope all goes well

if u are using the drip method ....soak it in 6 ph and order some salt remover for hydro system up (the drip method will build up salts in the clay and u will need to flush say every 6 weeks to 8 weeks)

here is a sample u can pick your own this is from HTG

this is one of the reason i said to remove the pump and feeder ring and go with dwc strait

Bad news...all the seedlings in the previous pics died before my hydroton got here so i have to start fresh. I supposed i was letting them get too dry or the temps might have been too high, or the ph might have been off. I didnt run the RW under water for an hour, i just soaked it for a day in 5.5ph tap water. Also, I dont have a humidity dome or anything, just a humidifier. I germinated another seed and placed it in RW while the tail was still short..so ill see how that works out. Im also gonna germinate another one and have the taproot grow longer before transplanting first. I was seeing more success with the RW with longer taproots before transplanting. Im in the process of ordering a new thermometer so idk what the temps were.

I finally finished my setup tho, here it is. The first pic is of the new seeding down in the rockwool so you cant really see it. Its on the drip system so im hoping itll sprout within a few days out of that rockwool.

I'm not worried about salt buildup because they will only be on the drip system for about a week or so until they really sprout then I will take them off the drip system and revert to straight DWC. I have the air stones bubbling in both buckets as well also at the same time. Ill wait on my new one to germinate with the longer taproot and see how it takes to that.

Question is...so with the drip system its ok for the RW to be wet 24/7? I thought that would be kinda like overwatering. I'm starting not to like RW as much, i figured it would be a difficult transition from soil.
