Seed death. Advice for next time

Germed 3 fem seeds on snday, they'd all sprouted on tuesday so they went into small pots under my 400w hps (about 2.5 ft away) and watered them in. However by last night, nothing had happened. I moved around some of the soil and found that on my Amnesia Lemon and Master Kush the tap root had shrivelled up. On the White widow it had just stayed the same. I fear that my pots were slightly too big so the water was sinking too low for the plant to reach as it felt very dry despte daily watering. Anyway I've carefully replanted the seeds in small peat pots whick should hold in he water better under a humidifier and under my old 85 6400k cfl. I don't have much hope for tem so I've ordered 3 more though can't really afford to keep doing that as that shit gets expensive. So for next time shall I put them in the smaller pots under the cfl straight away? Also for this early period is it best to keep lights on 24/0 to maintain consistant temps? Soil is biobizz allmix, perhaps I should get the seedling compost as well.

Any help appreciated and rep given.
Thanks

Before I sow my seeds I take three and stack them on top of each other. The height of all three is the depth I use for sowing them. For the growing medium I prefer a coir or peat moss mix that specifically mentions "seed starting" on the bag. It should feel crumbly and slightly spongey. I keep the medium moist using a spray bottle set to mist. Once the seeds sprout above the grown their roots should be several inches long. I like to water a lot once, then check the container by lifting it twice a day, and once it feels 50% lighter, I'll water until I see run off.

For Germination, I soak my seeds overnight, then the next morning I put it in the Paper towel method and the tap root is usually out by the end of the day. After they germinate, I usually start them in one of those 16oz Party cups and always start with cfl. I also like to use coco because of how much water it holds, It has the perfect air/water ratio:)

i pre-soak til they sink, in a weak kelp solution, and plant in 2" pots with neutral mix. about 85% success. i figure, the ones that can't germinate like that are problem children anyway.

thanks for all the help everyone. I think I just got a bit ahead of myself now I have an hps and had some larger pots around. The plant I currently have going started in a peat pot under CFL so i think when I get my new seeds I'll do it that way but maybe get some seedling compost instead of starting in the allmix.

Amazingly it looks like two of these guys might survive. Have been keeping them moist under a bt of clear plastic (leaving vent) under an 85w cfl and one popped out with a set of leaves earlier while another seems to have rooted. Amnesia Lemon and White Widow are alive!... For now at least
