Seedling/Clone Tub

Day 1

Hello, I know there is new content posted every day, but here is my version of a great clone/seedling box. I had a grow journal back in the day on OG when it was the sh*t... F*ck you John Ashcroft! I'm done with that.. On with the show and my coming back Album.

This is a new grow starting from seedlings. I have a test run of MG (I know I know, but why not test it and see what happens) Seedling mix. The others are in Rockwool cubes.

To be continued ...

(Read captions on pictures for info... too tired to type it all again.)

View of the box with the shop lights off. I don't give a damn about light leakage.

he top, I messed around with configurations a bit before I settled on what you see here.

This is a view through a vent hole.

6 CFLs screwed to a board in a staggered pattern.

4X 27W (100W eq.) 5600K

Other half of the dome and lights.

Active exhaust fan.

DIY light hood, yes that is the dreaded ALUMINUM FOIL...

Dun dun dunnnn...

My wire splicing job.

I spliced two extension cords into 6 bulbs at 3 bulbs each cord.

Hanging hook...

Other hanging hook.

Exhaust fan and phone charger power supply.

My rooting heat mat.

Simple power cord.

3 way extension goes to a wall timer.

Heat pad is plugged in separately.

Seedlings that are stretching due to bad lighting under shop fluoro tubes.

Shop flouro tube that was my temp source of light.

Looks prett fucking cool but get rid of that aluminum foil:evil:
Mylar or flat white paint.... i would also get a humidity dome that isnt as tall or get the lights closer beacuse those seedlings are streching a little bit
anyway Nice
peace:joint:

Thanks for stopping by IGC...

LOL!

I knew the AL foil was going to come up. That is why I mentioned it in the picture comments on my album.

The aluminum foil is just fine, I'm sure ES would back that up. The lights are not hot and the foil creates no hot spots. If I had a HID light I would consider using mylar. All of my old grows on OG were with foil, flat white paint and a HPS.

You are right that white paint, mylar, and panda film are more efficient, but at this stage I have more than enough light for the size of the project at hand.

The tall seedlings are like that because (encase you didn't notice) it is day one in the new box, before that they were under a weak shop light.

I hate starting a new setup and basically the seeds germinated faster than I needed and got a bit stretchy before I had the box up and running. I should have germed a day or two closer to pay day.

They will be mother plants anyway so size doesn't mater to me, the cuttings will all be much shorter and perfect in my new veg box. (Pictures on that to follow).

Now where are the CFL haters and cardboard haters!

(I'm going to add in my comments from the album now to make more sense of things.)

The Miracle Grow germed seeds popped too quick for me, I'm a hydro guy but thinking about going soil for the mother plants after watching the MG Seedling Mix shoot them up faster than pH balanced Rockwool with seedling nutes. Then hydro the cuttings. This box is just a stopping place for clones in about 4 weeks.

I will have pictures up for a mother box and a special new type of flower chamber that has me excited. Mums the word though until it is finished.

Somehow I managed to kill 13 of 16 rockwool seedlings. What a shame, here are the survivers:

I have no real good experiences with rockwool so I figured why not experiment, and what better than a new setup to try it out in.

As far as the Miracle Grow Seedling Mix 4 of 8:

Biggest one with a little CFL burn.

It's next door neighbor.

And the lower two.

My new mylar hood design.

In detail...

An overview with the hood off...

I have been abusing these plants a bit, they are hardy. Heat issues and the coming winter have been throwing me some curve balls and the plants have suffered being grown in a basement and all.

Look for my twin mother boxes to come out next. Round two of this setup will be much better and pictures will be posted once the seedling chamber is being used as a clone chamber for the two different pants.

By the way the red and blue are references to the part of the country the beans came from.

Nice ingenuity.

If I might make a suggestion however regarding the moisture I see in the photos that you posted.

Looks mighty damp in there m8, and the plants show signs of needing to dry out a little.

Great build.

Thanks for stopping by, the pictures were taken just after watering, I mist lightly one day and flood the next. The soil stays moist much longer than the rockwool and that is what is killing the rockwool ones, too dry. Hard to find a happy medium with both and my limited maintenance schedule.

Updated pictures later today... I'm hating rockwool and will be asking a few questions about them because I would like to use them for my clones but it seems like everything I put in them is dying.

Someone on RIU can help me, I have talked to my guy at the hydro store and cannot get this figured out.

I soak in this tub.

My rockwool soaking tub.

I add the right amount of this stuff.

Rockwool conditioning solution.

The ingredients in the tub with the conditioning solution.

Nutes and amounts in the tub.

The rockwool soaking and waiting for clones.

Does anyone see anything wrong with that?

I germ some seeds and see them pop then place them in the pre-soaked cubes and a week later I get this.

Failed rockwool seedlings. :(

I'm so frustrated right now with rockwool but I need it to get my clones working. I've been thinking of just using a different type of starter plugs.

Whats up DubB?

Looks like you have way too much water involved there M8.

RW should be damp not wet, if too wet seeds will rot not pop.

I crack the seed to about a 3/8" tap root in damp paper towels then stick them point down into the conditioned RW cubes.

I also put the cube into the media I am going to use and put some plastic over it till the seedling touches the plastic then remove it altogether.

I forgot to mention that I shook the RW before placing it in the humidy dome to get the extra water out. The seeds had popped 1/4 of an inch before I put them in the RW and they sat in the dome until dry to the bottom. Picture was taken after I watered with purified water to get moisture back in to the RW. I had an accident and can not walk down stairs right now so I am abusing my plants yet again...

Don't call PPS! (The plant version of Child Protection Services, ha ha ha)

Thanks for the suggestions, +k or whatever it is on this site to you for giving me the tips!

Here are the results of trial and error with rockwool.

Ok, so last week I took some more cubes out of my soak box and cloned a tomato plant from here:

Made this to try the cube out with a clone(it worked):

I also loaded up some beans in rockwool and placed some in hydroton and some outside hydroton:

Success! I got sprouts and healthy roots:

A few roots from the new seedlings.

Future experiments waiting to happen.

4 for 4, I win rockwool!

Ha ha, there she blows!

Tomorrow I'm going to post pictures of my manual flood table for the clones in net pots. Other clones in rockwool will go directly into it.

Love it hate it, let me know what you think. This is not a grow journal and posting of ideas/comments is well appreciated.

If it works DubB, I love it Hee Hee.

Glad to see more babies in the world.

I have little experience with hydro but am gaining knowledge every day, as I see you are as well. Keep up the excellent effort.

RW is difficult to work with but for its cheapness and availability I think it is worth it,
.
