Seedling Deformities

I've "researched" online but am dissatisfied.

New to growing, I've now popped a lot of seeds (sometimes using freebies to practice popping them and topping). I have tried different methods (rapid rooter, rockwool, paper towel, straight to media) and settled on straight to media. I have observed some similar early plant "deformities"? that appear across methods. Mostly seems might be strain based, but some evidence suggests something else.

For the current run, here's what I did:
ProMixHP pre-mixed with light feed of AN phPerfect (1ml/L = weakest dulution). Also added CalMax. (a past run omitted calmax but saw similar deformities fyi). The ProMixHP only gets enough nutes to be "slightly wet". It is not anywhere near saturated.
I then make a small hole 1-2cm deep, lightly cover with media, then add 5ml plain water (ph adj 6.2) directly on top of seedling. Germination rates are great, many packs (Rosetta Stone 2016 Brothers Grimm for example) were 12/12. The only loser this batch is Moonshine Haze from RareDankness and the same is true of a pack of those I popped in the summer... 6/12 made it.

now you have the backstory, here's what I see.
some of the leaves get a curled up, kind of gnarly look to them.
MOONSHINE HAZE did this the first pack I had as well and those were in rockwool not soil. I do want to emphasize that the moonshine haze (I have those in flower now) grew out of this deformity.

here's what it looks like

in my current run I popped a bunch of packs of seeds, and AGAIN moonshine haze exhibits this.

But I want to EMPHASIZE that it appears in other strains also.

Here is a "zoomed out view" of a bunch of seedlings. You can see they generally look good!

If you look closely though, there's one on the left middle (Tangerine Somali 2) that has the deformity. Most of that strain look great except for TS2.

But then another strain like Moonshine Haze... first as I said only 6 survived (7 germed, but one died)... these must be OLD stock from its cup winning days? One pack came from seedsman, and the second from GTA Seedbank. Many more suffer...

But then check out this strain. These are fresh seeds from a friend, and 12/12 germinated (unlike the moonshine haze). But look how many seem to exhibit this issue

the most terrifying possibility I stumbled upon was TMV but I dont think that is very likely. As a new grower I should have no contamination issues from anywhere, and the previous seedlings in a past run seemed to grow out of it. Also researching TMV it seemed to indicate that the plants would show slower growth, but none of the plants that had this seedling look in the past seemed to have trouble growing.

Heres an example from back in July...

Ultimately it may be a "moot point" but I am ever wanting to learn more and understand this amazing plant.

Sorry man I guess I kind of missed the question. Is it why do some seedling have deformities? Could it just be nature? Just as some people are? I get like one oddity per 10 seeds or so. And I always grow them out still. Here a current one. Grew like this since day one. No training. Multiple tops

My perspective, which is influenced by other brothers in our community, the first couple sets of leaves have deformities sometimes. And they usually grow out of it. There's a multitude of reasons WHY they are deformed, but thats beyond me. Probably genetics obviously. I've had deformed/mutated leaves and I'm like w.t.f.... then they just grow out of it.

If you are concerned that you have TMV you can get a test kit from agdia, pathoscreen, pathoscreen, immunocomb or others and see for sure. Usually it turns out not to be TMV though, rather a nutrient deficiency or root health problems.

Here is a link to someone that used a test kit, looks like his results were negative for TMV although he did suspect he had TMV.

(in reference to spliffendz) Yeah course its possible! Thats why I came and explained my methods to try and trouble shoot. All the soil should be the same (and was a light feed) with plain water added. I'd rather be the mistake myself than something else. You say that like I should be insulted, when I came here admitting I don't know. I will say, I have showed these photos to well informed folks at the local grow shop, and they are much more suspect of TMV.

Yes Refro is right; these are not deformed. That twisting from being in hot soil or too much nutrient. They don’t need anything but water for the first 3-4 weeks.
I do of course hope this is true. But I mixed (20L or more I cant remember) a giant batch of pro mix, and mixed and mixed to make sure it was consistent. I have many seedslings going, and it seems if I was really stupid on nutes or anything then it would exhibit in more. These symptoms seem more acute to specific plants.

It's not personal, I just think outside the box

Save the mix you have currently and use it for seedlings later on. Spent soil works great for the youngins. Keep in mind each seed is different; plants have their own personalities.
