Seedling Light Wattage and Distance

I have seedlings about 9 days old and about 2 inches tall. How close to the light should the seedlings be? I have adjustable ballast capable of 360, 400, and 600 watts.

Currently it is 4 ft above my plants and on 360. The seedlings seem to be stretching a little.

The ballast is capable of useing several different sizes of bulb.Just because the ballast is on at 360 doesn`t mean that you`re gettin 360.It depends on what size bulb your using. If your using a 400 bulb and your ballast is on at 600.Your only goin to get 400 watts.

Sorry, it is a 600 MH watt bulb and the ballast is set at 360... I've moved the light approximately 3ft from the plants this morning -- not sure if this is too close...

oh, I see, well, i kind of agree with the guy who starts under cfls, but i only do it the first 3-5 (maybe 7 days if they arent doing as well as i'd like) till they get semi-established and then put under the hid lighting. ive got a air cooled hood so i start the hid 12-16 inches till they start taking off then bring it down to 4-6 inches. if you can do the same w/o it frying them i'd reccomend you do the same.

I can probably get my light 2 inches from my seedlings.

But let me put my question another way: Is there every too much light for seedlings?
