The damn thing won't open up. Is there anything I can do to help it sprout or should I just let it be?

You may want to wait and see what happens if your really counting on getting something out of that lil one....but if you've got the balls, I had to do this to a pepper seedling recently.....

Take a razor blade and use the back edge of it ( not the sharp edge ) to gently slide up between the two little leaves. There is most definitely a risk of damage, but it worked for me.

Hard to tell from photos, is the membrane stuck around the cotyledon?

Sometimes, you have to remove the membrane manually. If left too long on the seedling the membrane can dry and make it hard for the sprout to open. Sometimes they open on their own, but it seems to be better to get that membrane off as soon as they are above ground, otherwise you will find little brown squeezed spots that look like the thing had a turniquet on. If the membrane is there, and if it is dried/stuck to the leaves, you can drip water on to "lube it up" and with a finger nail slide the membrane off, gently.

Is there a membrane?

If no membrane it might have already damped off and died, or it might still be waiting to open (usually happens pretty fast tho, 1 or two days no open = no bueno)

It looks like the membrane is covering the tip to me. But it's not real clear in the pic. If it is then spray with plane water lightly. A few minutes later GENTLY remove the membrane.

How was the seed germinated? If you handled it you might have damaged it.

It also looks like it's in a pot that is way over sized.

Sorry you've become victim of the dreaded seed cloaking syndrome... Hopefully all will work out by waiting or performing open seed surgery as prescribed above! Good luck and carry on!
even if it does survive it will forever be a smaller plant than its sisters. whenever possible germinate extra seeds
