Sexing questions

I started some seeds that are just starting to sprout in an attempt to get male and female plants for a breeding program. How soon should I expect to be able to judge which are male and female? I understand that females have pistols or hairs and that males show signs of a seed like round structure where the pistols would be. I just don't know how soon I can see the round seed like structures. Furthermore if I can distinguish between the two sexes then do they need to be separated and how soon? I would appreciate any help given

I suggest that you read some books on growing if you are asking these questions. These are some of the most basic questions and without knowing these things , it might be difficult to start your "breeding program". With that being said, each strain is different but you should see signs of sex at around 45ish days. Separate them after starting flower.

I appreciate the help. As stated I have done research on what to look for on a male plant and a female plant however I have never found any documentation letting me know how soon I will see these differences in the plant. That's the only reason I asked and at the end of the day I just don't want to be staring at my plants every day trying to figure out what sex they are. I would rather just ask and have a time frame. That's all. Also I thought that about separating them just before flowering but I just wanted to make sure so I don't mess up. That I probably should have done more research on before asking honestly. But again thank you

Fair enough. You are welcome. Keep in mind that 45 days is when they should show definitely. It may be earlier or not. They show signs of sexual maturity when they are ready to flower. Some do not wait for this to their own detriment. Seeds are different than clones because you never what you are going to get. Could be male or female and it might be a keeper pheno or not.

20171101_083731.jpg I'm gonna piggyback into this because I am dying, waiting on my 2 strains to show sex so I can put the females into the cabinet and flip to 12/12. I am pretty sure, but this is strain dependent as well, right. I imagine environment plays a significant role as well? I have 2 Motarebel Romberry plants and 2 Blueberry Gorilla Bubble from Tony Green at 46 days from sprout and they aren't showing anything as of yet.

I am crossing a bunch of strains for seed stock for the first time myself so I am by no means an expert but I think I can help answer your Qs. The males will show first; use a magnifier to see the flowers as they form. Boys get clusters of pollen glands and the girls get white pistils. The plants that seem to grow more vigorously than others more often tend to be males. Plants reach sexual maturity in about 6 weeks as somebody already mentioned so if you try to force flower before that it can take longer for them to show. It takes 5-10 days for mature plants to show their sex.
Optimal conditions will produce more females; temps are important. You can expect about a 50/50 mix given perfect temps and sufficient lighting (MH 400 or better is best IMO) so if you end up with more girls than boys that is the best you could hope for.
Male pollen is messy so you gotta be careful. I mistakenly seeded out my whole damn bloom room; thought I was being super cautious too with just a a few grains of pollen on a moistened paint brush. Turn off all the fans for a day or so. I think that was my mistake lol. Always separate the sexes ASAP and wipe down everything after the boys are composted. Collect the male pollen in a clean glass jar by shaking off the flowers inside it. Brush the yellow gold into a baggie & store in the freezer.

One would think. I don't have Any means of magnification but I have gone over these things time and time again to no avail. It's gotta show eventually.

Well in my experience the longer they take to show the more likely they are to be female

You can get 60x scopes for less than $10 on amazon or at any grow shop for slightly more. If you are growing, you need one to find mites, thrips, and check trichomes for finish. Just get one.

Sometimes, they just don't want to give up their secrets. Keep checking. No big deal if you have to go a week into flower to figure it out.

My issue is that I only have room for 2 in the cabinet. So, I'd like to know what's what before putting them.in there.

There are some tricks you can use to speed things up. If your plant is big enough, You can take a clone and throw it right into 12/12, or light dep a small branch in a blackout bag.

The clone will develop flowers or balls before it develops roots.
