Shock

So I just transplanted one of my bigger plants, and I didn't use the smaller pots where the soil comes out in a big clump. I didn't just pull it out roots and all(obviously) I was just kind of wondering how exposed can the roots be until it puts itself into shock?
Any input is appreciated.
