Should I Buy 600w HPS or MH? (Already have 400w HPS and a bunch of 6500k CFLs)

I wanted to get some advice on what the best lighting upgrade would be:

Currently I have a 400w HPS bulb and a bunch of CFLs (about 6-

All the CFLs I have are either 5500k or 6500k and range from 60w to 105w (this is the actual wattage- box says each is comparable to 300+w blah blah)


The ballast that I have can use both HPS and MH and can also switch between 400w and 600w.

I have two options
either I can either get a 600w MH or a 600w HPS.

I figured that the MH would be ideal for veg, but I also think that since all the CFLs are in the veg spectrum, adding a MH may just be overkill- while if I increased the power of the HPS from the 400w that I have to 600w- I can use it in conjunction with the CFLs and then use that as a full spectrum setup which I'd keep constant throughout the whole grow.


Is switching from 400w to 600w a worthwhile upgrade? My grow room is a closet that is 4'x4'
Plan to have at least 4 plants


I would greatly appreciate any advice as to how to get an optimal lighting setup with what I have. Thanks in advance!

always go with hps! .... if you have a switchable ballast what is the question???? personally it sonds shitty to me why is it a 400/600/mh/hps I guess you could run a 400 mh for veg and flower with a 600w hps or just go 600 hps the whole way.... I would prefer to have a seperat 400w ballast and 600w ballast. but if space is limited and you have to veg and flower in the same room than go with the 600w hps you can always run a mh conversion bulb or flip the switch or whatever the hell your freaky ballast has going on

there are conversion bulbs too but it would be cheapest on amazon.com maybe or hidhut.com. a 600 watt hps bulb if thats all you need its about 35 bucks and up. in a small closet you might need another fan too but I want to upgrade soon too so good luck

1.) use them CLFs to start seedlings and/or keep a mother ..

2.) get a 400W MH for Veg.

3.) get a 600W HPS for flowering
