So, what do you guys think?

I'm doing a first HID grow.. I was originally planning on buying a $30 standard GE 250w HPS... But now I'm considering dropping the 80-90 at the start for a real nice bulb for flowering.. after all flowering IS the most important step

I may have a few extra bucks for the hortilux.. but I don't want to spend the extra $50 if it's not really worth it... Money is tight at the moment

Thoughts? What do you use?

Thanks for stopping in :)

You're not going to get an extra 7 grams for the money. Buy the GE and spend the extra on something you'll need.

Save your money. All bulbs are the same, its all marketing hype. Im sure GE bulbs put out the same spectrum as Sun Agro and Hortilux but cost half of the price, its all marketing, dont forget that. I have grown with every type of hps bulb, and beyond the wattage of the bulb I have never seen any benefit except to the company getting more of my money.

What are you reasons for using a 250? Might as well go 400, or if you can 600. Dont go 1000 unless you can afford air/water cooled lights.
All bulbs are not equal. Hortilux will out produce a standard HPS any day of the week. Its not about lumens its about PAR ratings and spectrum which Hortilux excels at both...

shit i was hoping for some good reasons to get the ge. i'm using an eye hortilux and it's 90 bucks at my local store for a 400. the ge would be about 30 but is only "in the catalog" anyway, but ge (while not the first brand most people think of for growing) has never disappointed me with their other bulbs. i've also seen 2 side by sides where their floros blew more expensive brands away for basic vegging. i grasp that hid lighting is a whole other ballgame but i still think ge should be able to make a decent bulb.
