General rule of thumb is that you could safely grow a foot of plant per gallon of soil. So you could grow 3 feet of plant in a 3 gallon pot. Or something like that. Bigger is always better though. No risk of plants being rootbound and I believe they grow quicker and bigger.

okay thanks.. is there any chance of a plant dieing because it needs a bigger pot?
Not if you treat it right. You can grow in a 8oz solo cup if you want to. I have some 2' gals in 2qt. pots. I'll get some pic's of them later today. these pots are about 1 gal.

They usually won't die from being in too small a pot but it'll definately stunt their growth. They become root bound when they have too little space, the roots start growing in circles and get knotted which will really fuck the plant up

It's all in the way you treat them. Rootbound is a mute point. But small pots will limit the size of a plant. you can only go about 2' in a 8oz cup. It's not ez to do. I don't have the skill to grow large plants in small cups But there are those that do.
