Simple Bubbleponic Questions

Okay, so I have been reading a lot about Bubbleponics but there are a few things I do not understand. Sorry for the beginner questions, but there are some thing I do not get.

1. I had read something about draining your rez at least once every week, and then filling it back up with the water and nutrients that may be needed. Well how am I suppose to fill it back up, do I actually open the lid? Cause I heard that the roots shouldn't be exposed to light. I know it's a dumb question but it is seriously bothering me.

2. I heard that when I first put the germinated seed in rock wool, that I should let it sit in the Bubbleponic system for 24 hours without any light, then put it on a schedule once they actually sprout, is this true? I heard of people starting the light cycle before they actually sprout at all, so I'm a little confused about that.

3. I heard that once my plants start drinking a gallon a day, that I need to replenish that gallon, how will I be able to tell how much water is gone from th reservoir, just by opening the lid and looking in it?

I won't be growing until early July and I just want to have every little detail down to a t, because I can't afford to do a mediocre job with this much money involved.

hey purpcloud, welcome to the boards,

1. Draining rez is a weekly thing for me, you can open the lid, it is prolonged root exposure to light that causes problems. it wont hurt the roots to be exposed while you are changing the rez.

2.not sure about germinated seedlings in a bubble cloner, im a clone junkie,

3. I just look into the rez everyday or so, and if the water level is dropping, its usualy a sign your babies are drinkin, which is a good thing. hence the importance of a ppm/tds meter, you want to be able to monitor how much nutrients your plants are drinking.
Im actualy new to this forum, and deepwater culture, but that is my 2 cents, hope it helps,
their are plenty of people on this forum that are very knowledgable, and have helped me,
Dont forget to check the forums, using the advanced search feature, and goodluck!

1. Weekly draining is up to you and your plants but not a must. Some grows I only changed 2 or 3 times TOTAL and you see my dry weights in my sig. Use an extra 5gal bucket to put your plant and it's roots into while you clean and refill the actual grow bucket.

2. Stay away from shitwool aka rockwool. All in all it causes too many PH probs, especially for newbs. It has a natural PH of approx 7.8 and must be pre-soaked in a lower PH in order to use them. Go with inert Rapid Rooter plugs made from coco fiber by-products and are perfect for clones too. Just moisten, not dripping wet, with your PH'd water/mild nute solution for seedlings and plant the seed or clone.

3. Yes. Open the lid and peek in or attach some tubing on the outside as a rez marker. Look at others buckets or Waterfarms for an example.

I only drain once in a full grow.
There is no need for any light until you see green
When you first fill your res with the correct amount of water, mark the level and bring it up to that each day
I leave one netcup hole empty but covered as an access port
A little light in the res when you are working does no harm

Hey Purp. Nice to meet you :D Im using bubbleponics atm as well. My rez holds 8 gallons of nute solution, but it says only use 6. Try to think of it as fractions. I put a line inside my tank so when i look inside i can tell when its low/lower. Fill it up to ur desired operating-level then put a mark or something inside. I used a Sharpie then let it dry. This way you can tell how much they're drinking/eating. When it gets low, I know to add 1/6 of my water/nutes back into the rez. Roseman has some good stuff on bubbleponics. I haz a journal on my current grow and whatnot if u need visual perks ;) I started the 2 i have from seed in the big system. Plan on starting 2 more if that helps. But yea, germ, wait for taproot, transfer to rockwool or w/e, wait for like 12-16 hrs of no light, then hit em with light after they've sat for a few ;) Did all of mine that way thusfar. Definately a learning situation. Took a couple days then they popped ;) Good luck and happy growing
