Small DWC - how many plants?

Hello to all my fellow weedling's,

I'm planning to grow Nirvana's Jock Horror or Chrystal indoors around September...it will be my 1st time so I'm planning well ahead (wish I started years ago :-?). My setup will be at least 2'x3' & 6' high closet style & would like to grow enough to last me until the harvest on my 2nd grow i.e. 3months. Deep water culture (DWC) is the method I hope to use with LED but I'm unsure about one thing just now;
  • For a 50L (11gal) reservoir how many plants is safe to grow in my closet? On the net I see many similar sized reservoirs with 6 plants but I feel this is too much if they grow to about 3ft...any suggestions?

Thanks everyone,

Peace

Depends much on your desired plant size. My last grow was SCROG with two plants vegged for two month and 40 L was s tiny bit small at the end (roots fit but I had to change res every 5 days). If you want smaller plants, you could ofcourse put in more.

On the other hand, I don't really thing puting lots of plants into one res is a good idea. Specially if going from seed or with different strains specially. If one gets sick or has different feeding requirements, you will not be able to adjust the enviroment per plant.

Cheers spanky, dont think I'll be vegging anyway near two months as Im aiming for a max growth of 3ft per plant. I prefer one reservoir because its less work (one strain at a time though). I'm inclined to try 4plants in a 50Litre reservoir at 3ft full height to get the most out of my closet space :)

With an 11 gallon res i would say 2. My babies in 5 gallons eat up between 1 to 3 gallons of water a day so if you had that small of a res with 3 or 4 plants, you would end up having to swap it out every day. Better bet to just get a bigger res. 11 is pretty small

Thanks Kmog, will see about a bigger reservoir then. I don't wanna have to fill up the water everyday...was hoping to fill it up every 2-3 days with a complete changeover once every week or 10 days. I want it to be as easy & fun as possible so it doesn't turn into a 2nd job! I was going to go the soil way because it sounds easier & the plants don't need as much attention with the nuts but DWC seems to deliver much better results (speed & yields) compared to the 'extra' tasks required i.e. topping up the res,changing the res, adding nuts each & every time etc.

But will have to see what I can fit in the closet...I could grow 4 smaller plants but then the grow area (6'+ height) might not be fully maximised. Seems its a trade-off question which can only really be answered through actual experience which I don't have yet. Will try to fit a bigger res because 4plants is what i'm hoping for without all the hassle :)

I would say 2, maybe up to 4 if you go 12/12 from seed but not 3 footers...
Cheers for the input Hydro...it seems for a simple DWC the water to plants ratio is at least 5gal per plant for adequate growth. If I want 4 such plants I need nearly 100litres of water which is a lot to handle I think (well worth it obviously if it turns out right!). Will see what I can fit in the closet then determine how many plants & how long to veg. I plan to grow in Sept so plenty of time to sort shit out :)

By the way I'm hearing about people experiencing eye problems because of the strong lights in the grow room...obviously you shouldn't look at lights directly but probably a good idea to use shades or something.

Peace
