Small worms? Help

I just noticed a few clones I got from a friend weren't growing very well and got to looking at them and at the base it was rotten and weak and I broke the plant off and there were tiny little worms in the stock.... What are they? How do you get them? how fast do they spread? How do I prevent them? Thanks
