So confused - stretching

I have two plants. Due to an asymmetrical light one plant was taller than the other. I started 12/12 seven weeks ago. The taller plant has continued to grow. I have continued to move the light up to accommodate it. The light has been 2-3" from the top of the tall plant.

The smaller plant has not been noticeably growing and is starting to mature. Stigmas are turning brown and trichromes are starting to get milky.

The taller plant is continuing to grow. New small buds are growing from the top and the light is as high as it can go. I probably did under fertilized it when cyle changed and over compensated for a while.

This is my first grow. I would like to understand what is going on so that I do not repeat it on my next (second) grow.

I have that same issue. All I can think is that I have differant strains as I used Bagseed for diff. Crops. you can use some thing to raise the plant closer to the light like books or bricks etc..Thats what i did. Some plants grow smaller just like people.

depending on how think the stem is on the taller one. i would low stress it to the same height as the shorter one. lower the light down to the top of both of them. if the stem is to think on the taller one it may take a few days to LST it.

what type of lighting are you using btw?
and what type of lighting did you use to veg them?

I used a 150w HPS in a 12 x 18 enclosure for both veg and flower.

is the shorter one a herm that you noticed?
i ahve one that grew really short that was a herm but the other one which is the same strain didnt.

also in the future id get a bluer spectrum for veggin its gonna help the plant alot

No, this is totally logical: the tall plant keeps getting plenty of light to keep growing nicely, whereas the smaller one isn't getting enough light. The intensity of the light decreases VERY quickly as distance increases, so even a few inches' difference can do this. The tall plant is flourishing and will have a better yield, but the small one will mature faster since it's kind of struggling from lack of light and it wants to get pollinated sooner.

Oh and the original fix is to never have asymmetrical lighting. The temporary fix at this point is LST. Look it up if you've never heard of it and give it a shot. LST will give the shorter plant a chance to catch up height-wise, and the tall one will get bushier and still do very well.

yea like i said earlier LST will be a good fix for it. hps has a "far-red" lighting output which is seen by the plant not used.. when this lighting is reflected the other plants they know theres other plants around due to the higher amount of far red lighting being reflected, putting the plants in a race for light.. the stronger plant will out grow the other plants to dominate the light in the area.. the reason why i asked if it was a herm cause that will put a struggle on that plant keeping less likely to out grow the other

Raise the shorter plant using a small cardboard box.

Your HPS will be more than adequate for all growth phases following germination. However, you could buy an HPS to MH conversion bulb for veg phase without spending a lot of money.

i had this happen on my grow. i got a 400 watt mh and i had theplants about 3 feet away from the light and they streched taller someone on this forum told me to bring the light closer and it will grow bushier and it did but i had to put in a pc fan to keep the plants from burning

I was told MH should be no further than 2 feet no closer than 12 inches

I appreciate all the input. I should have said earlier that I have a six site DWC so raising a plant is not an option. On the next grow, I will either rotate the light or the reservoir 180 degrees as needed to keep the height more uniform. I have read a bit here regarding lst. Does it apply to hydro? and if so is it too late into flowering (2-3 weeks to go)?

Yes it applies to hydro. That late into flowering won't harm your plants, but it also isn't enough time to work as well as it normally would. Still, try it out for the last few weeks.
