Those CXB's are awesome. 100 lpw, which isn't bad at all. DIY is still more efficient. The biggest problem I see with the CXB is the CCT of 4000K. Most folks recommend about 5000K for veg, and a much "warmer" light for flower. 2700K or 3000K. 4000K sits right in the middle, throwing out a whole bunch of light but probably not the best for growing. Looks like the 4000K CXB is about $480 at Platt.

Also, the CXB is designed to hang way up high. I'm guessing you wouldn't be happy with the spread inside a closet.

The Cree Edge Series lights look awesome too, and available in 5000K. Think of the veg room you could build around one of those.

I'd spend my money on dedicated grow lights. Wonder if Cree will get around to making their own line of grow lights?

I remember when PSU posted that light in the Companies sticky and I've always wondered about it since it's a MCOB and some companies were touting MCOBs as "better" solution than a single COB, yet I haven't seen a lot of MCOBs at all. Cooling issues? Lumens per area not high enough? Marketing BS from the pro MCOB folks? (Probably).

The light spread from those cxb cobs is probably similar to the cxa, hence the reflector for high bay use...........4000k is fine for veg-flower IMO. You can get it for under $400 without the reflector shipped to your door.

Cree is coming out with horticultural fixtures according to a rep...........but have zero idea on design or chips/spectra used. Will be interesting to see if they go cobs or single diodes. I guess the former, as this current product makes for a great grow fixture and cheaper to build.......BUT I'm always wrong:)

this chip seems to be pretty alright but how does it stack up to a cxa3070?

Vero 29's are good, picograv had some good results using two of them. The Vero 29 is slightly less efficient than the 3070, but is easier to find. Digikey has a good selection of different color and CRI and is about $3 cheaper than the vender you linked. Running them at about 1.4amps seems like a good compromise of cost vs output.
