i could be wrong but i think he may have been taking a jab at your chosen soil. i wouldn't use the food spikes. and when you say your soil has no nutes in it, do you mean they have been depleted already or do you mean there's no nutes? mg soil has a bunch of time release food in it so be very certain that there's no food left before you feed or you will burn them.
