So i was Outside this Afternoon...........

So i was outside this afternoon enjoying the rare sun in the Michigan winter with my dog in our back 40 and usually look up at the sky, sun and clouds and think of God and the afterlife and the ones that have gone before me in life, ya know the story.

But today I saw the sky for what it was, atmosphere encompassing the Earth and I saw the sun and knew how old the light was that was hitting my face and I knew how long it took to get there and how fast it went, I saw the clouds and knew how they formed and felt the wind and understood the shift in weather layers...more scientific explanations for what I saw and less spiritual.

Watching alot of the Science channel and Dr. Brian Cox and his shows and beginning to question my faith, well starting to understand that there might be a chance that we all may just be a chance happening in the universe, that we know nothing about.

But i enjoyed the sun while it was out and that felt good.:leaf:

Sounds almost like an "ah ha!" Moment to me.
My favorite pastime is sitting in my yard on a hot, yet windy day just before night and just stare at the sky waiting for the night lights to come on. Stars, moon and sky have always taken my breath away.

Good for you, man! It sounds like your critical thinking skills are reaching new heights. I remember a similar experience when I was 11 or 12, walking to church for midnight Christmas service with friends & family: I remember the colored lights reflecting off the untouched blanket of snow on the lawns, our laughter and camaraderie, the anticipation of the food and presents. Then I realized, these things were enough on their own, is there really an invisible, mute deity that we need to worship? Richard Dawkins (my favorite author) wrote a wonderful book entitled, 'Unweaving the Rainbow'. In it, he explains how people were angry at Newton for explaining the rainbow as a splitting of the white light spectrum, thereby ruining their mystery and awe. Dawkins view is that science does not damper/hinder the beauty and majesty of natural phenomena by explaining their physical properties, but instead greatly enhances them! I share his view. The experience of listening to a sermon or scripture, or believing simply that, 'God did it!' is nothing compared to viewing photos from the Hubble telescope, understanding evolution, special and general relativity, the nature of sub-atomic particles and light, etc.. Keep on your quest for reality, you'll love the freedom that comes from it... "In some respects, science has far surpassed religion in delivering awe. How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, "This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant. God must be even greater than we dreamed"? Instead they say, "No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way." - Dr. Carl Sagan

I love being in that moment where you can "see the unseen". Visualizing in your mind the dynamics of the atmosphere, or the qualities of the light hitting your eye. Realizing this is all just signals being processed by chemicals. Cool shit.
