You know I was wondering that. I'm new on my very first grow ever and so far things seem to be going well. I'm one week into 12/12 and 6 weeks from seed. And NO big frostie buds like in pics I've seen. I got pistils. There all females but unless they blow up in a week something's off. So I see what your sayin

That's when I start counting flower time, otherwise you're including your transition from veg to flower. It can sometimes take a week or more for a plant to fully transition into flower. The recent cut I harvested wouldn't start truly flowering until 8 days of 12/12.

you should see a fair few pistils after two weeks with most hybrids that finish in 8-9 weeks
,some quick finishing sativa hybrids often build buds early and can have small buds all over the plant by 3 weeks

indicas tend to start slower and have more of a growth spurt at 4 weeks onward

longer flowering sativas can take a few weeks to show pistils

if you veg your plants for less than 4-5 weeks or they have not shown any pre flowers
it can take longer to show pistils perhaps 3 weeks of 12/12 to show
since the plant would of not been "mature" before you flowered it

peace

The general rule of thumb is flowering begins 2 weeks from the flip. Generally. And every environment is different, so don't try to "keep up with the Jones'"
this is true, ^^ but there is a cut off point for bad genetics
shouldn't happen too often
if plants have not shown pistils by 4 weeks and they are meant to finish in 9 and do not look like a long flowering sativa ., they are duds in my book
but if they are not showing because of grower error well then that's a different story

Here is my plants at 16 days into flower one strain is Critical Sensi Star by Delicious seeds the other is Grapefruit by female seeds. (They were flipped 12/12 on 8/30 and started to show sex on sept 1)

I think the main difference is when people start counting. I agree, it should be from whenever they first start showing flowers as that will typically finish close tot the breeder's flowering time. I've recently changed my count and method but it works out about the same. I pre-stretch them @14/10 for 8-10 days, this induces stretch and starts pre-flowering. When I finally put them into the flower room at 12/12, they flower quickly, flowers show within 3-4 days so I'm counting from the flip to 12/12 but really they're about 1 1/2 weeks into transformation by then. Below is an example of my current run using this method, they are at Day 12 of 12/12, but Day 20 from when I first flipped them to 14/10. Different strains of course will behave differently, the first bud pic is Jack The Ripper, second is Pure Power Plant (PPP). PPP buds show earlier and develop much faster than JTR's.

That's 4 plants, 3x PPP and 1x JTR, vegged/trained for 9 weeks from clones. The bud/cola footprint is 35" W x 38" L x 28" H, they were 30" tall when they came in to flower, tied them all back down to 24", and they've bounced back up, canopy is about 28" on average. I have 2x trellises in each pot, call it a vertical scrog, they're all LST'd, scrogged through the trellises, fim'd, and super-cropped into a big ball, around 32 good sized tops coming in :bigjoint:

are you peeking during the dark cycle? that will reverse the budding back to veg?

Well what do you class as a flower once the pistals show or when the plant has crested? Then start counting day one. Maybe that's what i have been doing wrong because I have always counted from about 5 days from 12-12.

Keep this in mind also: if running clones, your plants will not only trigger flowering much quicker, but will also finish a week or 2 faster in my experience. Also, a longer veg time will also induce flowering quicker. I wont put a plant into flower until she shows sex and is growing with staggered, alternating nodes.

Other suggestions to help the transition time is: If you transplant before flowering, as I do, make sure to give your girls at least a week to recoup from the sress of transplant. The same holds true to topping/fimming/super cropping.

So I typically wait to see sex and alternating nodes. Once i am happy with her size, I transplant to her final pot, the same day I then top her, and do any lst and tieing down. I give her a week to bounce back, then flip to 12/12
