Soil not drying out

I have 17 girls. Only half of them seem to be drying out between waterings. The others are staying too wet. They're planted in ProMix.

They're about a month old.

The temp is 72°f and the humidity is 30. There's air circulation in the room, but nothing crazy.

The girls in the never drying soil look a little wilty and have fungus gnats.

Help? More air circulation?

I suspect it's because the soil is too compact. The guy that transplanted them does this weird thing where he mixes the soil he uses to transplant with water and makes this mud mixture to transplant with. He's never been able to explain to me why.
From what I've read that's completely wrong. You don't want compact soil, it makes it harder for the roots to penetrate..
Am I right?

Maybe he's drunk. Aeration/drainage is extremely important in your medium (coir/perlite). Perhaps try 1 Part soil, 1 Part coco fiber, 1 Part perlite. What type of lighting are you using and how far away are they from your plants?

Let them dry then water less but more frequently

Could be like mentioned above some are closer to the heat source or in a hot spot in your grow space ......and your right packing the soil is a no no Mj like soft airy soil that drains and drys well .....

Lol if he doesnt explain his methods. Its possible he doesnt know what hes doing.

Sounds like there isn't enough perlite in the mix. Get a large fan and have it blowing at the pots.

I would not water a plant if the medium is still moist. Just leave it until it needs a watering.

Thanks everyone! Yeah the dude I took over for has absolutely no idea what he's doing. I turned on another fan and am letting them dry out even more.

They're definitely over watered. I plan on transplanting soon and making sure there's enough perlite in the mixture!

I've never had a problem with ProMix not drying out properly before, so I'm guessing this dude's transplanting technique is at fault..

Remember packing the soil is a method a drunk guy or someone under the influence of another substance besides pot would do .......I would call bullshit to that friend everytime you see him or have him read the message I leave below.

Promix dries after 4 days usually after a good watering, only reason it wouldn't is poor air circulation in the room or a plant that has stopped doing anything with the soil. Dropping temperatures also can extend the period of soil wetness. I don't know if others do it but i've never had to add additional perlite into a promix mix.
