Spotting/curling problems under mag+

Figured I'd ask my LED Lighternauts this instead of posting this to the general community. I'll give as much detail as I can to see if anyone can hit my problem on the head.

Observable Problems:
Right now for the last few days I've had some downward curling problems, to the point where the newer leaves coming in literally pull a u-turn. There's only 2 plants right now, both seem to be doing this, but one of them has these discolored spots showing up.

Context:
Well for starters, since this is my first grow, I started with some freebie mystery seeds so strain is unknown on both plants probably. Right now they'll be a month old on the 8th, I started them under T5's and switched them to LED's about 3 days ago, before going to Led there was no leaf curl. Being a newb, I fertilized once and fertilizer burned both plants with General Organics (go box full strength >_<). Since then, I have not fertilized. Considering the plants are almost a month old, they seem to be under performing quite a bit. My temps aren't great, when the light is running, temps can reach high 70's, when they're off I've seen as low as 63f (unheated room).

Other info, I've moved the lights up and down a few times to see if that fixes the leaf curl, now it's up probably 15-16in. I'm running only the blue spectrum right now since these seeds are not feminized. I've used a neem oil + dawn dish washing soap spray for pests, but have yet to fertilize again (Leaf burn sadness).

plants are in 4 inch potters, hydroton on the bottom for drainage, soil is promix seedling and there's a top layer of perlite to prevent mold on the top. Plants have about 4 sets of leaves as of now with more coming in.

So I'm leaving it up to you guys, what should I do?

These lights really distort my camera photos but you can kind of see the spotting on the close up shots.

Everytime I see pics like this i think one thing..........PH issues

Do you check your runoff?..if not go do wallmart/target and buy ph pool kit ($3.00) and give us your measurement....we can go from there.

I have an aquarium and pool kit ph test actually. Pool one doesn't have a large testing range but the aquarium one does. Tested run off and it appears to be about 6.8 for ph.

The spots may be from the overfertilizing...how many days ago was that? The curling may stop with the lights raised and/or might be from too much watering/over fert? Just some guesses

The first and last time I fertilized was probably 2-3 weeks ago when the first set of true leaves appeared. I try not to water to often, I give them a day of relative dryness before watering. I flushed the soil finally a few days ago since the new leaves are still coming in with burnt serrations. I'm hoping that took care of the fertilizer burns so I can mix some (diluted this time) fertilizers and feed it. I guess I'll have to watch how the new leaves come in to decide whether its time yet for that or not.

Yeah it sounds like you're taking all the right steps to get it corrected. I would say after flushing another time start on a light feeding regiment and hopefully they perk back up. What's the lowest youve gone with the lights?

could be calcium deficiency, are the spots mostly around the edges of leaves? are they an orange/rusty kinda colour?

Hard to say but I would venture to guess somewhere between 10in-12 in as the lowest. Right now its hoisted up as far as it can go up with the rope ratchet, I might need to devise another way to hold the lights up eventually. Right now its at about 15 inches.

Right now I'm trying to get my roku to run. In about a minute I'll try and take a picture under normal lighting for a better picture.

Hmmm 6.8 ....cross that off...
Another question.......when you overnuted was that the hydroton you have in the 4inch pots now????Did you thoroughly rinse it??flushed it when transplanted???it can still be leaching off nutes....
well figure this out....:-P...eventually

Never transplanted, they're in the same 4 inch pots they were in before. When I flushed I just flushed with enough water to rinse the soil a bit. If it may help though, I can transplant to either a 6.5 inch potter.

When I flushed it was pretty much about 1.5x what I normally water with and let it drain out into the sink for a while.

First thing, if you are talking about the Magnum plus, I'd have it at 36" for the time being, than adjust gradually. I would also run one day of only blues/whites, and three days at full spectrum, and so on.
I would also strongly advice you to make sure your medium consists of at least 40% perlite, this will help you with watering issues.

For every thing else about PH and Overfert that the other fellows have chatted with you about, I would follow their advices and adjust things accordingly.

Thanks for some pointers, when I get to repotting I'll mix in a higher % of perlite and will try to lift the lights later tonight. About the full spectrum though, is it safe to do that if you're starting non-fem seeds?

I wouldn't worry about that. I never heard of any association between red spectrum and males. You still want to veg with high red ratio spectrum for optimal growth.


Def raise your light, that's a potent light you have got and you will see yourself that the sweet spot isn't that close to your young plants, for the moment.

Cool thanks a ton for the pointers, I brought my light up as far as I could for now (38in from the ground), not exactly 36in from the plant but for now that should help. Also I'll be running at full spectrum for the new few days. Hopefully that clears things up. If all is well with the new growth I'll start back up ferts.

Once again, thanks for the tip guys. Lifting the light and going to full spectrum might of made the difference. The leaves still aren't uncurling just yet, but this morning there was about a 1/2 of inch of new growth on the larger plant. The spotting is showing up on the new growth, so I figured it was time to finally give in and drop a watering of nutrients at 1/2 strength and a quick spritz for foliar. I'll post pictures when it bounces back hopefully :D
