yo im wanting to give cultivation a shot, cus why the hell not...plus, it'd be sick to become self sufficient. anyways..if someone could list all that i'll need including links to amazon i will be forever grateful. I prefer for the kit to be affordable, of course. I plan to grow only for myself INDOORS in either my closet or attic space, whichever works best. Thanks again

What do you define as affordable? We may have different ideas as to what that means.

Kits are not the greatest values either, especially when you factor in the usually underpowered light and possibly cheap components that you're gonna replace anyway.

What size space are you working with?
Do you need to hide the smell in late flower?
What will the environment of your space be like - will you need a humidifier, a dehumidifier, an AC unit, a heater?

Why do we have to do all this work for you?
What do you have already or plan on getting?
Do you want to soil or soilless?

Good place to start and it ingratiates the grower to an RIU sponsor
Hell the OP might even win some gear :weed: :bigjoint:

These kits work fine. The one in that thread is a 150 watt light in a 2x2 area so it is providing 37.5 watts per square foot. Not underpowered at all for that space. You are right that they don't have the best components in them but they are complete and will get the job done. It's a fine starting point for a brand new grower.

I was going to point you towards @Doug Dawson 's thread.
Start to finish on a Mars Hydro kit.
My 4x4 veg tent has (2) Viparspectra burples running 530W total. (the grow link is in my sig)

My $.02:
READ --- A LOT.
Read all the grow journals you can find and copy the one you think that YOU CAN DO. There is more than enough info here for almost any grow method.
-- I thought I was going to do vertical aeroponics when I first thought about growing.
Then I read the learning curve, the headaches, the expense, the specialization ---- so I grow soil in a tent with LED -- pretty far from what I thought I'd do - but I grow unreal weed.

BELIEVE people when they tell you that Amazon light won't actually flower a 4x4 tent, and does not compare to a 15,000 watt double ended HPS while running at arctic temps.
-- I bought a kit with a light that would, "flower a 4x4". It doesn't. Now I have 6 similar little LED boxes - some with names some without. Some work great, some not so much. --- I would have saved a bit of money, and A LOT of headaches if I'd listened.

DON'T believe people who say that a "burple" (red / blue based light) won't work. Most of them work well --- if you have enough of them (see above).

DO - grow. When you can't get everything perfect (FEW, if any do) - Just grow.
Take all the advice you can get.
Build and grow as close to that advice as you can.
Improve each grow.

Again - figure out what you can build in your budget, follow advice, GROW.

That first point of your two cents is probably the most important of any of them.

Having a solid and correct basis for growing is one of the most important things you can start with before even acquiring any equipment.

Plan your grow and your method of growing before you start.

You're not wrong, never said they did not work...Kits are a great place to start...however I think of them as a great place to start doing research

All that shit in that mars hydro tent is cheap and can be used to grow or can be used as a list of what to replace, like a jumping off point.

What if our guy here is unaware he may need an AC unit and a humidifier...would you still suggest he get a 2x2?

I find kits are "affordable" however if I buy one and then after doing research I find I can actually afford a better light, a better fan, better equipment and a larger tent and then have to buy all that shit again, is it really affordable?

All depends on your budget, read and ask questions in here as above have said then read on the interweb and them read some more, Keep It Simple Stupid - KISS and most of all, patience, wax on wax off.

I agree, if nothing else the list helps. I don't recommend a 2x2, I recommend whatever size he wants, they come is all different sizes however if going in a closet a 2x2 or 2x4 is likely a good fit. You are right that if you bought it all twice it would not really relevant. OP needs to figure out their needs and budget. The kits are not only affordable but they work so I have no problem recommending one. Lets look at the other side of your argument. What happens when someone spends more and buys bigger only decide growing isn't for them? Minimal investment means minimal loss.

A kit isn't going to grow the weed for you. Do some basic research on plant science. Photosynthesis, nutrients and the role they play in plant growth, plant anatomy, etc... After you understand how a plant grows and what it needs then go buy a kit that has everything. Some early education will save you in the long run. You can't just buy your way into having good grows unless you pay someone that knows what they're doing to grow it for you.

I do think the marketing claims are settling down and becoming more realistic, especially amongst the somewhat established brands.
I have those 2 Viparspectra lights in my 4x4 even though I can't take pictures with them on, they hurt my eyes and a few other whines & gripes. They also grow great weed - looks good in my journal and smokes better in person -- which is the goal, last time I checked. :bigjoint:
So the Viparspectras (a VA-1200 & TC-600) are here to stay.

EDIT - I'm being pretty nice above --- Maui Wowie seems to make me generous lol. Buyer Beware - look for opinions on lights through grow journals - A decent light with a decent grower and decent genetics equals great weed.

OP - in my flowering tent I'm running 2 semi-DIY kit lights. If you're comfortable with wiring and assembly, that is another good route; it's also a huge step down the Rabbit Hole of grow equipment. ;)
