Stem too long?

Hey fellow growers! This is my first time growing- I was given a seed from my friend and I decided to bury it in a jar with soil and a banzai tree. Without properly germinating the seed, it successfully rooted and sprouted out of the soil. Problem is, I wasn't at my apartment for a week and a half, and I didn't actually think it would grow. So the stem and cotyledon leaves rose up from the soil, and because it wasn't under a proper growing light, it stretched to find what light it could on my windowsill. The stem was almost 4 inches long when it was around a week and half old. Now there is about a centimeter of stem in between the initial 'round' leaves and the actual vein-y leaves, which probably means the sprout was using all of its energy to find light instead of capturing light with bigger leaves. I transplanted it to its own pot a few days ago and it survived, I also put more soil around it so the stem is technically shorter (3 inches above the soil now). There is no noticeable marks or discolorations, beyond one tiny chomp mark on one of the round leaves. What I want to know is if I should continue growing this, as it is my only seed. I am debating about going out and buying a cfl bulb, and anything else I might need if this plant is worth the effort. It is about 3 weeks old now, and it isn't looking too strong but it's alive. The only thing I would say is probably wrong with it is that the leaves are still pretty small (the longest leaves are 2 inches from tip to tip) and the leaves look somewhat thin and papery- at least I think so. Here's some pictures:

I know that I didn't care for it properly at first, but I was wondering if anyone knew if my stem was too long for the plant to actually grow correctly.

Thanks spliffbazz, I'll definitely try that the next time I get my hands on some seeds. So is there any advice anyone can give me based on my first plant?

I try to take it outside as much as possible, but it's really windy today. I kind of just want to buy a lamp and nutrients and start over, but I don't know how to get any seeds at the moment...

itll be fine one of my plants grew completly to the left and then laid on the ground i gave up on it and just watered it not expecting anything and now its one of my strongest plants

i am having the same problem. i have been reading alot online and it has said that when growing indoors the stalks get skinny, but nothing about tall and skinny. my plants look just like yours. i did a home made grow box lined with tin foil and im using a 15w plant life bulb (home depot $8 ). i would like to know if my stalks will get thicker. my plants are about 3 weeks. and one of them does not stand straight up its kind of curvey. it might be helpful to put something next to the stems to keep them straight.
