Stevie Ray Vaughan

27th Aug 1990, Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed when the helicopter he was flying in, hit a man-made ski slope while trying to navigate through dense fog. Vaughan had played a show at Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, Wisconsin with Robert Cray & His Memphis Horns, and Eric Clapton. Vaughan was informed by a member of Clapton's crew that three seats were open on a helicopter returning to Chicago with Clapton's crew, it turned out there was only one seat left; Vaughan requested it from his brother, who obliged. Three members of Eric Clapton's entourage were also killed.

sad and grieve

SRV has no peers. Nobody seemed (seems) more an extension of his instrument than he. Or, I guess, you could say, his guitar was an extension of Stevie.

I got to see SRV at a blues fest with Stanley Jordan on bass in the spring before he died. I didn't know who he was going into the show (we were in high school and jumped the fence to get in). I was blown away. Unbelievable talent. He had recently sobered up, I later learned, and was totally on top of his game. Huge loss.

Eric Clapton actually didn't want to take the stage after SRV at that show in WI, from what I remember reading in an article a few years ago. He said it was the best show stevie ever played. tragic ending.
